All the above reasons for hanging here, plus I think there are some pretty smart fellers here. I always learn something.

And speaking of learning from smart fellers...we've all seen what happens when you put metal objects in a microwave oven, or at least were warned about not doing it. So, why is it that our new microwave (and most larger models we looked at) have a metal rack? Why no sparks?

haven'tseen racks in the microwaves yet....that's a new one for me!

i do have a retired microwave in the back just for testing the theory of not putting metal in them

If you have a small fluorescent tube around, that's fun to play with in the microwave.

Here is a video about using the rack in a similar oven.

Doing a little research on my question, it seems that metal objects with sharp edges or wrinkles, as you would have on a fork or wrinkled aluminum foil, may be a problem and cause sparking. The concentrated electrons at vertices can then arc through air. I guess if we think about it, the entire interior surface of the oven is metal, and that doesn't arc because it is smooth. A metal rack spanning the oven is okay, but if the rack touches the sides of the oven, a spark may occur at that narrow gap. I guess that explains why this rack has rounded corners. The ends of the cross wires are somewhat sharp, but they are beveled off more than most racks I've seen.

This rack is going to end up at the bottom of a drawer wasting space. I don't see much use for it really.

Maybe when I was younger and dumber that would'a been cool.
Now it just seems like a waste of time.

O' Lord I'm becoming my father.

Not a bad thing I guess.

I agree, doesn't seem like a very smart thing to do.

That feeling increases logarithmically as the years advance.

At some point we become our grandfathers; that's the best part.

You need more grand kids. They take the sting out of growing old.
