If I'm wrong about 30+ mpg figures, I'm wrong. I've been wrong before and I'm sure it'll happen again But if you know something the rest of us don't then please cite your reference.

My source is common sense. A 100 rpm reduction @ highway speed will not ever result in significant increases in mpg.

Just like my Superduty Torqshift does not use all 6 forward speeds, but only 5, it's rational to conclude (which the article stated) the 10 speed will also skip gears as well. That magical unicorn of a 10 speed will more than likely act like a 7 speed in most instances.

The bigger benefit of that particular 10 speed will be towing, especially the steeper granny 1st gear and shorter spread between gears while shifting.

Also keep in mind that trans was developed alongside General Motors for those that like to play brand favorite.

Yep, we need a like button. On the 10 speed, what about constant down shifting? I wonder if that will be a problem? I canno' stand a transmission to keep downshifting. Course, my '02 with 4 speed does a heap o' downshifting while towing, like yesterday... Whew, there's sure a lot of variables to consider now. Max tow, max payload (I want both!), 5.0, 3.5 Ecoboost, and this great little 2.7 Ecoboost! For now, that's the one I'm leaning toward, if it has max payload and max tow.

Shifting excessively was a problem decades ago, but not really something to worry about these days. That ten speed will shift a lot, but I'm betting you won't notice because of how close the ratios are.

So going by the article from last year Ford and GM essentially added an internal gear splitter rather than having more gear sets. Makes sense. Just hope it'll last 16 years of on and off abuse without an overhaul. Probably will only use the "added" gears under load or bucking winds or going up hill.

I had predicted the 2.7 getting close to 28mpg but I was off. If Ford truly is bringing in that Lion 3.0L diesel into the 2017 line up that'll be the 30mpg engine and whatever the hybrid setup will be later on. Any guesses which engine they'll hybrid? Ecoboost or some purpose built Atkinson N/A engine for it?

SOOOOO - do I trade my 2000 Excursion 7.3 for an F-150 2.7 and expect it to get 14 mpg hauling a 5,000 pound travel trailer over the Rockies?

Why would you expect 14? I'm sure it'll pull 5,000 over the Rockies with ease, and it might get 14 MPG doing it - if we knew how you intend to drive. Someone on here was going to tow 7,000 lbs at 80 MPH, and at that speed my truck doesn't get a whole lot more than 14 MPG running light. So, w/o knowing the conditions, type of trailer, etc there's no way to even guess, much less predict.

After several long trips (5,000-9,000 miles) in the Ex towing the trailer, I have documented 14mpg with gas receipts and odometer readings, not the MPG computer. Driving less than 10mph over the speed limit, yadda yadda. I'm not trying to be a smartass, just trying to get a germane opinion. Rockwood 2603, EW 3500, GVWR 7,000. This exact rig, 14mpg, Atlanta to Chamberlain, SD; to Seattle, WA; back to Glacier NP, AB; and down the Rockies to the VLA in New Mexico, back to ATL. Enough info?

Enough info. With your driving style you get 14 MPG.

Brahms, one more piece of info that I think is also important. How much of your driving is with a trailer attached? Is this truck going to be a dedicated tow rig for those long (and amazing sounding) trips, or do you also use it as a runabout the rest of the time?

Nobody really publishes towing fuel economy numbers, but based on discussions I've had with others, Diesel, like your current rig, will usually get better mileage while towing compared to any gas engine. My guess is that your mileage while towing isn't going to improve much, and could get worse.

I'm certain your mileage while running empty would be a whole lot better.

I agree, better mpg not towing, worse towing with the 2.7. I'd be surprised if any gasoline engine can get 14 towing your trailer. When I'm towing, I like to get 8-10 mpg, and that's the best I've ever gotten with many gas engines I've towed with over the years. I'll still take a gasoline over a diesel for a 1/2 ton truck. I do think the 2.7 will tow your rig on those trips fine.

It looks like the 9.75 does not come with the heavy towing option. And I did not see a max tow with the 2.7 or the 5.0.
I have a 2011 Ford f150 xl V8 5.0. It has the 9.75. With 3.55 gear ratio limited slip. Alot of power and torque with this truck. It's a literally a beast. Only complaint is the gas mileage. But what do you expect with a V8. Lol.
