wanna put my 99 expo 4.6 in place of a 5.4 expo 05 model
Ok sounds crazy i get it the thing is i have a 99 expo that has 349k miles but the engine was replaced with a crate motor at 320k the trans was also replaced at 299k so mechanically its in great shape everything else not so much.. My question is this im looking to use my 99 as a donor and have a chance to buy a 2005 expo eddie bauer thats like new but has a locked up 5.4 both 2wd.. Ive heard it would be a nightmare time and labor are not issues will do it myself if possible.. Im not stuck on the expo i jave been looking for a supercrew or something with a bad trans and something else with bad motor im just not exactly sure what i can use my parts on.. My 4.6 is a windsor i suppose 6 is the number in my vin and either has 13 or 14 valve cover bolts.. So it should already have 8 bolt crank and flywheel from what ive read so far.. I just bought this expo for 450 bucks and can get the 05 for around the same also tryin to buy a 06 f150 supercrew with bad trans can i possibly fix both the truck amd the 05 expo with my donor and scrap it and get my donor money back.. I havnt bought either yet because i wanna make sure i can do what i have planned if not what would be best for me to look for as far as easiest swap.. Any input would be greatly appreciated thanks

Technically the should bolt on fine, I'm pretty sure the bell housing is very similar but you'll have to confirm that by looking at them. But the problem is the PCM, the old PCM will not be able to run the transmission or other systems in the new '05, and the new PCM in the '05 will not be able to run the old engine.... So that is where your biggest problem will be.

you are up against a couple problems to make all of this work.
the older 4r70w can't be controlled by the pcm/tcm for the newer 4r75e, and the newer transmission won't work in the older truck for the same reason.
the older motor won't work in the newer trucks because the newer one will be drive-by-wire. you might be able to adapt the DBW to the older motor, but it will be expecting a 3-valve 5.4 with Variable Valve timing and all the associated sensors/components. You might be able to get it to work with a custom tune, though.
if I read it right with the vehicles you are attempting to work on, your best bet would be to sell the 99 as a runner, or part it out for the drivetrain, then get the 06 f150 and 05 expedition.
then swap the good motor from the f150 into the expedition and have a runner
or
swap the good trans from the expedition to the f150 and have a runner.
the 99 just isn't going to be much help to the newer trucks, there's just not enough in common between them.
the 05 and 06 are pretty similar, though, so you can make one from two with those pretty easy.

Yep, 2 knocks on '05 3V engines. It's not impossible to do it, but it's very difficult. It would most probably include a custom tune, or even a custom PCM and in the end it will not be worth it. Sell one of them and use the money to buy a long block for the '05, probably cheaper and its a cakewalk to swap it out
