460 Bronco Exhaust Recomendations

Right now I have true dual exhaust exiting behind the doors. I have L &L long tube headers, and Hooker Mufflers with no cats. One of my mufflers rusted out, and fell off on the way to putting it in winter storage. In the spring, I would like to replace it with new dual exhaust going all the way out the back below the bumper with 45s on the ends. I don't think they make complete exhaust kits without cats, so I will just have an exhaust shop do it. It was fairly loud and sounded good before the exhaust rusted. What mufflers do you guys recommend?

You can go online and find out what different mufflers sound like before you buy. I doubt it will sound exactly like your app. but it will give you an idea. As far as exiting under the rear bumper you may want to re-think that if you ever drive with rear window down. It "WILL" suck exhaust right back into the cab. Almost guaranteed.

It will definitely suck fumes back in if you go straight out the back, to the side behind the rear wheels even on an angle toward the bumper ends would be much better.

As for sound, how loud do you want it. I have a set of 40 series flowmasters on my 79, they exit in front of the rear wheels due to having fenderwell headers. it is quite loud. Typically by adding a longer tail pipe you will get more a crackle, then with just a short turn out.

I never drive with my rear window down, and plan on having it exit at 45 degree angles. Do you have a video of your flow master 40s? I have heard good things about them. I currently have it exiting before the rear tires, but the exhaust spits out water and caused that spot to rust out on both sides

Still had not updated the engine decal. It's in my signature what it really is.

In my personal opinion....

I would say if you're going to do the job, do it, and do it right the first time.

Take it to a reputable exhaust shop, (do your homework on this, maybe there's some Mustang forums that talk about shops in MN?). Everything will need to be welded, not clamped together, and if you're curious about how everything will sound, since it is a FE motor, more than likely, you can find exhaust clips on YouTube of Mustangs with a similar motor.

For example, with my F250, it has a 460 in it. I've already done my research out there on what type I like, and I used to have Flowmaster 40's on my Cobra back in high school. Then I found an exhaust clip on YouTube of an 86 F250 with a 460 with Flowmasters

I would also highly recommend an H-pipe. They sound best (compared to an X-pipe in my opinion) and still offer plenty of mid range torque.

Kind of hard to find a Bronco specific forum that talks about local exhaust shops in MN. Figured a Mustang forum would be able to help better because it's also Ford related.

Also with it being a Ford related product, the exhaust setups would sound very similar if not exact.

Thanks for the videos guys! SVTDriver 97, the 460 isn't an FE motor, its a 385 series, and I was planning on having Affordable Muffler in Forest Lake do the work for me. I have had them do work for me before. Toyman, that sounds pretty good!

Here is a short video of how it sounded before the exhaust fell off.

I have a 351 - 1983, had headers and dual exhaust that was rotting.
I set out to build my own dual exhaust - all the way out the back. I could not get my hands on a kit, stock was a single w/cat.

I ended up going to a local shop and had them custom build what I wanted.
So worth it, I had bought all these generic pipes and what-not trying to do it myself, took them back to the store, hired the garage.
