Why did you buy your super duty?

So this was kind of eluded to in another thread that was closed, but that thread was a time bomb anyways. Mine, however, is not! It's a straight up legitimate question that I'm curious to know:

What made you buy your Super Duty?

I'll start.

Because I wanted something that can do just about anything I want (that doesn't need a CDL.)

Well, years ago I had an F250 with the 7.3 diesel that we used on our ranch to haul cattle, horses, and whatever else we needed to haul. After that I told myself I would never own another diesel again! Not that it was a bad pickup but the maintenance cost of running a diesel was way too high for every day driving. That truck was an 89. That motor about rattled the truck apart! I had to re-weld the radiator supports and about every other weld on the front clip.
Now, 20 years later we found ourselves looking for another vehicle. We have a 32 foot camper that we had been pulling with our expedition or with my F150. Both of those are too wore out to trust too far from home, so it was time to upgrade. After much consideration I decided it would be our best bet to find a 250 or 350. I figured the diesel would be good for pulling the camper, and since it is not our daily driver it was worth the consideration. We got lucky and found a 2005 F350 for about $8000 under book value. It is probably a little more pickup than we really need, but it pulls our camper without even breaking a sweat! It has enough room for my family of 5.
I am still not 100 percent convinced that the diesel was our best choice mainly due to the maintenance cost, but towing the camper will make it worth it. Also one of my jobs I might have to pull heavy equipment or construction materials, this pickup will be able to do it.

Manhattan Ford

My 1999 F-250 Super Duty was ordered special with V-10 4x4 XL trim with chrome bumper, bench seat, 4.30 rear end, no power options, factory installed engine block heater, CD stereo, 4 wheel ABS, auto transmission. Waited 4 months?? to received truck because the dealer stated that the stereo was on back order. Because N.Y. state and NYC is crazy I made the salesman write on the special order that my special DDS license plate must be registered on this new truck. When the truck arrived the dealer told me they had to put a commercial plate on the truck due to GVW over a certain amount. I refused the commercial plate and informed them that I didn't want the truck without my plate DDS plate(dentist). Still registered to this day. This truck with 103,000 original miles is the backbone of my construction projects and motorcycle transport. Everyone including the salesman wanted to know why I needed a V-10 with a 4.30 rear axle ratio. Gas in 1999 NYC was .99 cents a gallon. I always laugh when people don't understand but when gas hit $5.00 /gallon I guess I need a tiny motor with a turbocharger. Sorry

My original choice for one had more to do with volume than GVWR. The Super Duty was the only truck at the time with a real 4-door crew cab for adults and a real 8 foot pickup bed.

For my purposes, having a pickup that does not let you carry massive volumes of "stuff" doesn't cut it.

Yesterday I saw two guys in the middle of an intersection picking up a large amount of lumber that had slid out of their short bed just a few blocks from Lowes - not me...

PS: I would by a pickup with 10' bed in a heartbeat!

I stumbled across my '04 while looking for a replacement for my Bronco. I knew I was going to buy a bigger boat so I needed some towing capacity. It was five years old but only had 17K miles. It's an XL with manual transfer case and hubs, which is hard to find, at least around here. I miss my power windows and locks, but I'll live.

I was looking for a newer used truck and came across my Super Duty. I don't use it for much but its nice knowing that if I need to haul or tow, it will get the job done.

It's so much nicer to tow with a diesel and it's also much nicer to tow with a vehicle that at least weighs as much as what you're towing. Both of these things are especially true when you're towing through the mountains.

Plain and simple. I wanted it. No other reason. I rarely tow or haul anything of real weight. A gas truck would easily do what I want to do. I owned a 97 F-Superduty with a 7.3 at the time, and I found the 02 with 80,000miles on it. I was familiar with the engine, and I always liked Ford, so the 02 Super Duty was my pick.

Multiple reasons -
  • I tend to haul, bulky heavy stuff and wanted an 8 foot bed, with a large payload, and a crew cab... and that combination wasn't available in an F-150.
  • I only tow heavy a few times a year, but wanted the peace of mind of having a competent tow rig when I need it. (My old F-150 could pull the load but it didn't make me feel confident.)
  • Testosterone!
  • I need to be able to carry my whole family and still carry a payload or tow (I have three teenaged sons who are 6'3", 6'6", and 6'8" and that's at least 700 lbs. of payload right there!)
  • I think Chevy trucks look kind of dorky.
  • I got turned off to Dodge trucks after seeing problems with the Interiors on relatively new (3 -4 year old) trucks that my co-workers own. Stupid stuff started falling apart.....
  • Testosterone!
  • I was brainwashed to like Fords from an early age - my Uncle was a Powertrain Engineer on Ford Medium Duty trucks for about 35 years. He was 100% Job One and according to him, Ford was the best.
  • Did I mention: Testosterone!

To tow my 9500 lb travel trailer. Stuck with Ford because of the good feedback on the 6.2L and 6R140. Took many months of checking the classifieds to find exactly what I wanted. 2011+, 6.2L, CCSB, XLT, Center console and adobe interior. Finally found it at CarMax. Truck has far exceeded my expectations, plan on keeping for 10+ years.

I wanted a replacement for my daily driver '05 Camry. I considered a few quick sedans, but they were mostly wannabe sports cars with too much weight to be actual fun. Already have a 2-seater for that stuff. Went 180 degrees in the other direction. Considered the awesome aluminum 150 but realized that a 350 was so insane it made me smile. Now I have to force myself to drive the convertible from time to time just to keep it from rusting.
Maybe I'm one of your "more bucks than brains" guys, but I haven't regretted my decision. Still grin every time I climb into the cab. (My wife and girls love it, too.)
