Hard shifting after warmed up

I have a 1993 Ford F150, 6 cylinder with an automatic transmission. The previous owner didn't do a lot of maintenance and I've been slowly getting it up to speed. 195k miles.

After driving the truck for an hour it will start to shift really hard. I was thinking about changing the fluid and filter. Is there anything else with the transmission I should maintenance?

You need to pull codes this trans is 100% computer controlled.

It doesn't cost that much for a new filter and a synthetic fluid change. I think it's worth a try. Make sure you drain the converter.

i know my truck is the exception, rather than the rule, but is it possible that he has a c6 ... or did they only offer the c6 in the f250 for these years ?

C6 was not available on a F150 in 1993. It was available on F250/350 until ~1996. Seems to be a special order/fleet/govt. option.

The one possibility for an non computer controlled transmission in a '93 F150 is the AOD but it is not known for developing hard shifts out of the blue. However the electronically controlled transmissions are known for exactly this because that is what the computer is programmed to do when it experiences communication problems with the trans or sensor problems with the engine.

No dash light are coming on, so I've heard that means it won't present any codes. It's a 3 speed auto with overdrive.

How do I check the trans type/model?

BTW - "values in the value body" Is that internal to the trans or something I can access while the trans pan is off?

You heard wrong. Many times there can be stored codes or other issue without triggering a Check Engine Light.

Check the door jamb sticker on the driver side B-pillar. Look for the TRANS code:

It should be TRANS Code: E (E4OD). It's a 4 speed automatic transmission.

TRANS Code T is an AOD (not available on a F150 w/I6 engine)

TRANS Code U is a 4R70W (not available on a F150 w/I6 engine)

Thanks for the help, it's a Type E (E40D). I took it to an old time transmission shop that's around the corner. Classically it drove perfectly and the shifts were great. He thought it might be the solenoid pack. As it gets hot it acts up.

As the pack is only $130, I thought I'd change the pack, fluid and filter. Hopefully, if that doesn't solve it I move to the neutral switch.

A Code check is free....

Warm up the truck then do this: How to run a self test.

Run the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) tests and stored code (Continuous Memory aka CM) display. List any codes you receive by number and when they were displayed. You should get three digit codes.

The challenge is finding a shop with the old testing equipment. I live in downtown atlanta. Everything around here is OBD-II.
