I Remember That

I remember that North Cumberland Service station pictured in frame 133. It was a landmark along North Mechanic Street, Alt US 40 on the north side of Cumberland, MD. I believe I've probably purchased gas there.

Thanks for the photos. I love the '48 F7 or F8 dump. I wonder where it was taken and what they are mining?

The door has Quincy IL on the side, so I'd wager that's limestone mined all along the bluffs of the Mississippi. I was just south of there in '73, there were abandoned mines all along the river road. It was summer and every time you'd pass the mouth of a mine, cool air would be rushing out. I understand they use some of them for secure records storage now, and one was converted to a mall (?!).

Edit: door says "Black White Limestone"

Black and White Limestone" I believe that was a Ford add. Lets see if the link to an ebay add works.
1950 Ad Ford Trucks Auto Bill Black White Limestone Quincy IL Quarry Work YFT5 | eBay
Link to the ad works and tells a bit about how the truck fleet was used.

Thanks Ross, I looked at the writing on the door, but I couldn't make it out, I see it now that you deciphered it. I didn't realize that they mined limestone in shaft mines. We have a lot of limestone here, but it is all quarried in open pits.

They just go straight in at road level, the bluffs are a couple hundred feet tall in most places.

Good find, Ray!

Why did that truck have tires tread on the front like the rear ones?

That Big Job has 1949 "E" series truck Illinois plates. They used to be issued to trucks in the 12,000 lb. to 14,000 lb. gvwr catagory which is too light for this truck. Not sure if the E is still used but don't think it is. My E-350 wears D plates for over 8,000 lbs, as it should. But I see plenty of F-350/E-350s (my wife's included) that somehow get by with B plates for under 8,000 lbs. For a state with money issues they are screwing themselves. I see H series plates still in use on commercial box trucks.

Those tires, Abe, are I think high ply rated for mining, construction, etc. Stu
