starter - 6v to 12v question....again! sorry

After looking over my whole electrical, the wires are so toasted, I don't even want to attempt giving it a go for the 6v, so I was hoping for few product numbers or suggestions. I want this to be safe to at least try and turn over.

I want to use a current new 12v battery (and charger) I already possess to attempt to start my 226 flathead 6. so working my way from the battery and bypassing the generator, and all other gauges, fan, lighting, and wiring at this juncture, I am just trying to hotwire this motor.... I have an ignition with no key, and the push button starter is not there, so this seems like the simplest diagram

1. Do I need to do something to the starter? Since it is/was 6v will it spin the other way as I tap it with a positive cable now? Does it need to be reversed somehow?

2. install a 12v coil (anyone have a number for a recommended coil?)

3. do I need a resistor? (if so does anyone have a number for a recommended resistor?)

I know I need to switch the wire on the + and - posts when going to the distributor

4. do I need new points (anyone have a number?)

5. do I need a new condenser (anyone have a number?)

This is my cruddy diagram, but I am a visual guy. Once I get this started I plan to convert to an alternator, voltage reducers, wire kit, etc..

The information in this old thread might be useful reading.

really great info, but nothing specific to the starter. Not sure if anything has to be done to it. If positive ground runs it one way, does negative ground run it the other way? Just double checking.

The starter will work. The type of motor used for the starter turns the same direction no matter the polarity.

I switched my system over to 12v negative ground. Still use the same 6v starter, but changed the solenoid to 12v. I reversed the primary leads on the coil and added a resistor. I'm using the same points, etc. You can rig a temporary hand-held push button switch to operate the solenoid, and a simple on-off toggle switch for the coil (ignition switch), or you can get one of the combo devices from an auto supply store that have all the functions incorporated into a neat little box with leads, alligator clips, and switches. This is the one I have.

In your schematic, I would add the toggle switch between the battery and the coil, and a 12v solenoid between the battery and starter.

If the 6 Cylinder motor uses the same starter as the V=8, just run 12 volts thru it. It w ill not hurt it, and it will spin that motor over better than 6 volts ever could
