Zf5 off powerstroke onto idi?

Will a zf5 transmission and transfercase from a 4wd 7.3 powerstroke bolt onto a 7.3 idi?

Yes, indeed it will. The 7.3 PSD has the same bellhousing bolt pattern.

But you need an IDI flywheel to run it with.

One from a 460 will work too if youre handy with a drill. Some would rather have the wide ratio gears the 460 gets. I think 96+ PSDs had the zf5-s47 vs the s42 in the IDIs which are a little more robust and are supposed to have better synchros.

Yes ive heard of guy doing that, is it really jist having to drill the bellhousing to fit it and thats it? Will the flywheel off the 460 work as well or no? Has anyone heard anything about the bellhousings cracking after being drilled or no?

I took the 460 gears and put it into the diesel housing. No drilling required plus i got the better gearing

I drilled one and it was pretty easy. Remove the adapter from the engine and bolt it to the trans using the couple bolt holes that line up, then use a 1/2" pilot point bit to drill the others. I've never heard of one cracking after drilling, there's plenty material there. I think they use the same casting for both and drill for whatever one it's going in.

remember, a PSD transmission does not have the provisions for the speedo gear,
its all electronic.
other than that, it will bolt up just fine

Good info though it does not apply to 4x4 since the speedo drive would be on the transfer case.

Or 92-and-up since the speedo is driven off the rear diff.

Your old xfer case will bolt up, but the PSD transfer case may not work. There were a handful of transfer cases used, and three that won't interchange due to rear output without swapping driveshafts. The differences are pretty obvious.

If it is a S5-47 (tougher front case) it will NOT be the "wide ratio" per se. The S547 got an in between gearing. Gasser/f450 wide ratio for instance get a 5.72:1 first where the "close ratio" gets a 4.14 first. T-19 is about the same as the close ratio, though wide ratios were made (BB gassers). The PSD first runs a 5.08 first. Not as deep as the gasser, but still better than the close ratio.

S5-47 gassers kept the wide ratio with 5.72 first.

Corrected per f834... :P

Depends on the year of PSD. Early years still had the S5-42 transmission. Look at the aluminum plate riveted to the driver's side of the case. It will tell you which model it is and which gear set it has.
