Possibly new to the Excursion community, few questions

Hey all,

My brothers friend owns a shop and has a 2005 Excursion 6.0 Limited black on tan that the original owner ran out of money to fix. I've expressed interest in it and he is willing to sell it.

Here's the low down. The owner of the vehicle brought it in a while back, like 8 months ago because the engine wasn't getting any oil pressure and decided to finish bullet proofing the engine at the same time. My brothers friend, the mechanic, took care of replacing the head gasket, fuel pump and a couple of other items and was getting ready to fix the oil pressure issue when the owner went through a divorce and lost funding. The truck has been sitting for 6 months and hasn't run, the mechanic took the battery out and now owns half of the truck, until the owner can pay him back. I talked to the mechanic and he said that the owner would be willing to sell it since he doesn't have the funds to finish it.

So here's what I know about the Excursion. It is a 2005 limited black/tan with around 280,000 miles. The engine has been bullet proofed, head studs, fuel system ect. It has an upgraded turbo which the mechanic says puts out around 450hp, not sure which turbo it is, and it is tuned, again not sure which tune, and does have, what looks like a MBRP 4" exhaust. The exterior is in excellent shape and the interior could use some help. The leather is cracking, which I assume is from it sitting, but should be able to be salvaged, and there are a few trim pieces missing, but nothing serious. It has not run in at least 6 months, and still doesn't run. The mechanic said he would take $10k for it and would get it running and fix the oil pressure issue. He's got a lot of projects going on at his shop right now and can't get to it, which would give me time to get my funds together, so that's not an issue for me.

I guess my question is is $10k worth it with all of the upgrades done as well as the bullet proofing even with 280k miles?

TIA

Personally, I wouldn't touch it for anywhere close to 10k even after the oil pressure issue was "fixed" unless the fix was a new engine.

Buying it as is you need to assume that motor is junk. I might pay $2500 as it sits, make it run first by "fixing" the oil pressure issue and I might pay $500 more but any motor with 280k and no oil pressure does not bode well.

I would move on and keep looking, Plenty of deals around that don't involve that level of risk.

I couldn't agree more... I've seen some 6.0's that blew head gaskets, screwed the heads, and went on to live happy lives. But a history of oil pressure problems? Personally I wouldn't touch one of these engines that ever had HPOP problems. That also means the HEUI injectors were starved of oil, and I'd bet they have problems ahead as well.

$4-5k maybe and have a seasoned 6.0 mechanic crack it open and do the injectors, HPOP, inspect the cylinders, and do all the other common fixes.

Agree with the above two posts, that's just a wallet breach and a headache. 280k is a LOT of miles, especially on a 2005 IMO. I know it's 10 years old, but my 14 year old 7.3 has 260k and I drive it a LOT, like 200 miles daily commute.

Lack of oil pressure is terrifying, especially since that starts calling into question the main and cam bearings, the injectors, pushrods, valve springs, rocker arms... There's just way to much at risk that hasn't been addressed yet. I'm willing to bet that's a contributing factor to the new upgraded turbo as well. I starved the 7.3 for oil once when a line exploded, and it obliterated the turbo and three injectors within 10 minutes (trying to limp to exit ramp).

I'd give it a max of $5000 with all issues fixed, but the labor alone on that thing so far is going to exceed that - and parts haven't even been accounted for at that point.

Find something else that actually runs and drives, because what you're looking at is a nuclear apocalypse disguised as a trainwreck.

It's definitely not worth 10k, i dont think it's worth $10k even if it was running. While they may have fixed the HG's they didnt put new lifters in the block...and at 280k its a time bomb. No 6.0 IMO is bulletproofed unless it got new lifters installed aswell. I've seen too many of them fail and junk the engine. Its worth its value as parts...$2500 maybe more its a nice rust free body.

Also the lack of oil pressure probably means a lifter already failed.

Just my $.02 not meant to be harsh, just dont want to see anyone get screwed, unintentionally or not.

Thanks for the responses. I'll stay far away from it. What was surprising to me was that blue book said that $10k was the fair market suggested retail for a 2005 limited 6.0 fully loaded with 280k on the clock, that's the only reason I asked.

Again, I appreciate the help.

In the price guides I have never seen the condition of the vehicle described as "Running" or "Not Running"

If your wanting to come & play you can do a WHOLE LOT MORE BETTER for 10 K than a dead 6.0
