1950 magic air heater control restore

It's getting cold and my heater controls were a pain and in bad shape so this morning I set out to restore them. One at a time I took them out, soaked them and the hardware in prep and etch. Then wire wheeled them, soaked in kroil, then sprayed with silicone lubricant. I had found ***** identical except they had H on them. I buffed that off, heated the end of the metal shaft with a butane torch, then forced the **** on. Reinstalled everything once they cooled and they are as smooth as butter!

I think that is cheapest project so far! $1.50 in parts.

I can't thank you enough Scotty for giving me the prep and etch tip. I use that stuff for everything now, assuming that it will fit in my bath contraption I made. Parts look like new when they come out.

DC but they are not in the truck section, they are in the cAr section, I think either a 46 or 48. Just polish off the letters with a polisher and wax.

I think I picked them up at a swap meet several weeks ago, can't remember. They were in a DC bag though, unfortunately I tossed the bags after I buffed them. I think early ford also has them, they are in the car section. I don't think mine had def, just a red h. They are perfect matches and look fantastic I have to say myself. The action on the cables is also perfect, just the right tension.

Don't give up on the buffing either, the writing will come off. I used the small buffing pads from HF and car cleaner wax. If you go too fast you will deform and pit the ****. So slow and steady.

Also get the shaft just hot enough but not too hot. The object is to get it just hot enough to form the plastic on the grooves of the shaft then quickly cool to have a permanent hold.

Ford was frugal, they used parts from previous years. The stock radio ***** for the '48-50 truck radios are the same as, I think, the '41-42 car. The only difference is the "flower" dial behind the volumn and selector ***** are clear on the car and brown on the truck which a can of spray paint takes care of.

Also, the tail lights on the '48-56 panel trucks are the same as the '41 car.

Nice job on the heater panel. If you want paint it hammer tone gray paint is pretty close to stock color and texture.

Thank you Bob

I may do that when I do a coolant flush and can take the whole unit out. I did find a new badge but am in the middle of planning a rewire adding turn signals and rebuilding a transmission so I need to keep my open project list managable! LOL, our never ending struggle...

By the way to all I remembered while hunting this afternoon I picked up the ***** from Bob at Half Ton. But they are from an earlier Ford car as you say.
