What's that sound/feeling?

My dad purchased him his first F-150 about 6 months ago. It's a 2012 Ecoboost King Ranch 4WD. It also has the max tow package. The truck is nice and he recently spent his first $1000 on it for some new Michelins.

But one thing I've noticed the last few times I've been in it, is the truck has a weird feeling to it on acceleration, fast or slow, it feels like the tailgate is dropping from halfway. It's certainly not something I'm used to on trucks, and I've driven almost all the newer pickups.

His truck also vibrates a bit more when taking off with the locker on or the 4WD engaged.

Any ideas?

Okay. Definitely not half-way, but that is the best description in feeling although a little less dramatic.

Does it feel like it's misfiring from condensation build up? How many miles are on the truck?

Should never have that locker engaged unless you're on ice/mud/dirt/sand. That's not a good thing...

Anything sliding around in the bed? Is the spare tight to its mount?

I've just turned it on to verify it worked.

He doesn't keep anything in the bed but great suggestion on the spare tire part. I do remember dropping it to look around under it after he bought it. I think I put it up tight but I'll have to ask him to double check.

Hi Ford'05HG,

Any luck tracking down the source of the sound? Keep in mind you can always get the truck into the hands of your local Ford Dealership. How many miles are on it?

Hi Crystal,

sorry for the late reply. I have not tracked down the issue. It's not my truck, but my fathers and I only see it a few times a year.

The truck has 50,000 miles and we haven't taken it to the dealer. Nothing seems to concern my dad unless the truck doesn't run. I'd just like to be sure it's not a loose axles or something that can be detrimental to the life of the truck, or more importantly, my dad.

I am out here right now visiting him. I checked the truck earlier today and the spare was tight. I took it for a drive but it still hasn't given me any clues, or none that I'm reading. It's a tornado warning outside right now, so if the truck is still there in the morning, I'll be ready for more suggestions to check on.

Thanks

Thanks for the update, Ford'05HG. Let me know if you decide to take the truck into his Ford Dealership for diagnosis. If so, I'll take a look over some resources on my end to see how I can help. Stay safe!

There was a TSB for this & Ford has a procedure to fix it. Seems like a good place to start.

Is that something Ford pays for?

I was out of warranty so I had to pay. I get all my service done at the dealer so he only charged me something like $60. He said he gave me a little break on the price.

They grease the yoke on the driveshaft. My truck does this same thing and it is do to axle wrap because a leaf spring stiffness issue. Some members have added traction bars to fix the problem.

It was slightly more involved than grease. The had to remove the slip yoke, clean the old grease, apply new grease (different kind than original), install a new style boot and clamps. The whole thing comes in a kit with everything you need to do the job. If you don't get the new grease, boot and clamps the problem will come back.
