2013 4x4 hub problem

I just bought a 2013 f250 xl with 76000 miles. Locked hubs for the first time and drove and I get a whirring noise out of drivers side in 2wd. goes away in 4x4. Unlock hubs and noise goes away. Could hubs be broken? or should I just replace the stock junkers and forget about it? Thanks

It could be the driveshaft turning while hubs are locked. With the system engaged, more parts and movement is involved and can mask a light noise like whirring.

The problem is right at the wheel it sounds. hub does unlock and turn freely. was only at the drivers side. sounds like its not engaging fully? this was all with the hubs locked but truck in 2wd

Congrats on the truck, sealer700! It sounds like you might try to repair this yourself, but keep in mind you can always get the local Ford Dealership involved. If you decide to visit your dealer, let me know; I'll check out some ways to help.

If you have a warranty when you bought it I would take it in.

Otherwise I would pull the hub. It may just need serviced is all.

The hubs they use now are actually pretty good.

It could also be a wheel bearing issue that you are hearing.

I think I would repeat the pattern and drive it for several miles and get out and check for excessive heat at the wheel bearing and see what you get.

You may not be releasing the hub entirely.
Check for vacuum switch not venting properly
or the lube in the hubs may be gummed up.
