Can you find a business to ship it for you? Shipping charges have gone insane for regular folks. To answer your question. Greyhound may be an option. I have shipped large sheet metal items reasonable.

Check with local transmission shops, they may have containers purpose-made for trannies. They may also be willing to ship it for you. I've shipped a couple on pallets and even the truckers were pretty strict about there being no oil in it, reasonably clean, not dripping.

You could ship it to me!

Here's a post that might be helpful.

I have shipped a couple of large items via Greyhound (bus) Freight. They are very acomidating.

The easiest way I can think of would be to wrap it with the stretch wrap used to pack boxes on a pallet. It's cheap and will cover it well. Find or make a small wood pallet and secure it to the structure with banding strap or screw it down with plumbers tape.

You can also try a company called Fastenall. They will ship stuff store to store using their network. I did a quote once but never used them.

And a last thought, on the Ford Barn are several auto transporters who travel the US and take on parts to fill out the load.
Here is one example, Truly Vintage post his info in the text: http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=182939
