3.5/4.0 Diesel Exhaust on a V-10

Anybody ever put a 3.5/4.0' diesel exhaust on a V-10 ? I just installed Borla headers on my truck, now I want to open up the rest of the exhaust . Most aftermarket cat back systems for the V-10 are 3", the same as stock. I can't see replacing a 3' system with a 3' system. I did find a FlowMaster cat back system for the diesels in 3.5' for around $250.00.

Anyone done this ? How does it sound ? Performance gains?

The headers are great, low end torque really increased. I have a Custom burned Diablo Delta chip coming from Ken also. Can't wait !

hey mark, did you crank it up with open headers?how do you like them?i think anything to reduce backpressure should work as far as bigger diesel exhaust, probaly would sound cool too.

Daryl,

Good to see you on the boards. Yea.... after I cut all the custom Y-pipe crap out I had to add a pipe from the header flange to the beginning of the cat. I finished all the headers Friday night around 11:00 p.m. So first thing Sat. morning 8:00 a.m. I head off to the exhaust shop. Talk about LOUD ! My wife is still raising all he!! about me waking the neigborhood up.

Anyway....the headers are great! Should have done it long ago instead of wasting all the time and money on the Y pipe mods. Started to do true duals off the headers, no cat, but rumor is they will include my truck in emissions inspections in the next several years.

I think anything larger than 3" will cause a loss of torque. Or maybe move the powerband up so high it's worthless. I agree the factory tail pipe is ok, only a small dimple probably not enough to make a difference. I would replace the muffler with your favorite 3" in and 3" out, and run it.

V104Me,

Do you think I would loose torque even with the long tube headers, and cat still installed ? I have a FlowMaster 70 series muffler on the truck now. It just sounds too restricted, real raspy.

Muffler suggestion ?

I know someone on here put a larger diesel cat back on a V-10. Just can't find out who it is.

Thanks.........

GAV10,
I really like the Bank's headers, from what I've seen they are the longest. Long tubes generally mean more torque down low, as long as the diameter is within reason. I think mufflers are a personal preference. I have a Magna Flow. The flow rating was good and it sounds good to me.

Our motors spend the most time below 3000 rpm, this is the reason you would not want a huge exhaust system. You need some backpressure for low-end torque.

ok, i have no loss of trq,i pull a heavy shrimp boat and i can really feel a difference in my pulling ability in lower rpms.my set up is 2.5" pipes, but are bent where it restricts the flow in the bends so maybe i have enough restriction?i think if you chip it or program it will gain trq at low rpms, mine did.now if you do exhaust mod without chipping it you will lose low end trq.before i did anything to my truck it would downshift into second gear going up the luling bridge in new orleans area and it is a bridge over the mississippi river [high], now i can maintain about 75 mph in 3rd gear.just my experience.

V10KLZZ71S, I have been told by many people (have no facts to back it up) that a 3" exhaust will outflow 2.5" duals. I believe your 2.5" duals would produce good low-end torque. My experience has been with K&N FIKP and good 3" muffler. My tow results were MUCH better. Tow load is 9000 lbs. I would like to install headers and TB, just takes dollars. I like chips, but don't want to run premium. BTW low rpm to me means 2100 - 3000.
