Ford Changed 6.2L Oil Spec to 5w/30 for MY 2016

Anyone else notice the oil spec change to 5w/30 for MY 2016 in the 6.2L? Ford implemented the change in MY 2015 in the Commercial Cutaways. I'm sure the diehard 5w/20 users will have something to say.

Subscribing... wondering whats going on with the switch. Did Ford Engineering find a problem with 5W20 in 6.2L ?

5W30 is just a slightly thicker oil that would give some additional protection. It sounds like Ford might be going back to the 10W-40 days. When I was growing up dad would change the oil in the driveway. Every 3000 miles. In the summer months, it was 10W40. In the Winter months it was 10W30. Anything else was sacrilage. This was true into the 2000s. When I had a Explorer it required a 5W30 that was "This cannot be correct" in his book. Now even he uses 5W30 for everything except on vehicle which still gets 10W-XX Now when I worked for a local telecom company, it was 15W40 in everything gas or diesel. You got an oil change once every 6 months.

At work, I just changed the oil in the work van (E250 with a 4.6 V8) with MC syn blend 5W20. However, I would consider using a 5W-30 or due to the wear on the engine and the condition the engine is used in "i.e. towing and delivery vehicle". While performing the oil service, the boss asked me the best realistic practice. I said not like my last company, too long between. Going every 5K is going to increase downtime and create scheduling issues for servicing. I said once every 4 months with a regular oil checks once a week should keep the engine happy with oil. We know we have been burning oil. Now we keep some on hand when it gets checked.

IMO, 5W30 would offer better protection to the engine and should be modified to the climate.

My guess is it's not problem related. Ford may specify what oil weight they recommend but as we know owners will run all sorts of weights. I've run 30 and 40 weight full syn's for long OCI's in my previous Triton engines without issue. The OA's I did previously were all unremarkable. I'll be doing long OCI's on my 6.2L and sampling along the way to see how far a full syn can be extended in these newer beasts.
I suggest doing some research on the "bob is the oil guy" forums and educate yourselfs further. Lots of good info.

Interesting. I think many of us though would like to know Fords reasoning for changing the recommended flavour, not read through a whole ton of technical stuff on oils.

Look at the specs on the 5w30 oil they want. Is it synthetic now, when the previous spec was semi-synth or dino could be used?

My Taurus with the 3.5L Ecoboost takes 5w30 semi-synth, and I use full synth Mobil 1 in it.

I suspect that they are just switching everything over to the 5w30 that my Taurus calls for as a cost-saving measure for factories and dealers.

This is like when I got my V10 - previous year used 5w30, mine said 5w20 - I stuck with 5w30

It will be interesting to see it their Quick Change lanes stay with 5w-20 or go to the 30 weight, I think I will ask next time they change it for me.

My 2000 V10 said 5w-30 and that's what I stayed with for 13 years even after the service builtin came out.

I am going to go with this explanation.

Making a slight gas millage difference for the levied requirements.
