i am building a new engine for my 6/77 F-250 4x4. i have been told the 400 2wd oil pan is the same as a 4wd oil pan. does anybody know if thats true ? i found a 81 400 2wd in a wrecking yard today but didnt wanna pull the pan until i had confirmation.

That is not true. They are very much different. Rear sump vs front sump

 

correct on the sump location, sorry forgot to mention that. but the pan i found is in fact a rear sump, just in a 2wd chassis. was hoping it would work in my 4wd application

 

I have not seen a rear sump 2wd. All should be front sump. Look at the pics in my build thread, that's what a 2wd 400 pan looks like

 

I think starting in 80 there all rear sumps. My 86 2 wd had a rear sump pan it was a 351w though. It should work.Id grab the pick up tube for the pan your getting.
