metal chips in primary fuel filter 2010 6.4 f-450

So now in week two of owning this truck. Im begining to understand why there are so many trucks avail for sale that are over 5 years old.....basically with expired warranty.

so going thru everything and found a small amount of metal chips in the primary filter. from my research.......

a. injectors are failing
b. injectors previously failed and were replaced during warrany
c. high pressure fuel pump at risk
d. high pressure fuel pump failed during warranty and was replaced.

I guess I'll be driving this truck local only until I get an oasis report and have a better under standing of the history of the work done on the truck.

There should not have been any metal in the filter.

A proper repair would have meant new injectors, hpfp, filters, tank flush and fuels lines flushed.

So there's metal in the filter? What's it going to do if you don't clean whole system?

I changed all the fuel filters , added a fuel system lube and drove the truck this weekend about 300 miles.

pulled the primary fuel filter and no fragments.

someone needs to come up with a filter kit to put between the high pressure pump and the injectors.

The way I understand the system is, Fuel enters primary from tank, is filtered for water and large particles, is pressurized to 3-5lbs and sent to secondary filter, filtered for a smaller particle size then goes to hpfp, pressured up to requirement called for by pcm, enters fuel rail then injector, fires some fuel not used for combustion returns to secondary filter via fuel cooler. An orfice in the returns caused some fuel to be refiltered at the scondary the rest returns to tank. That is ho the metal got in the primary. IIRC this truck is new to you. No way to know of a previous failure. Keep on with your filter assesments till your confident no more trouble. I would drop the tank. half a day well spent. An AirDog or Fass will be on mine before it runs again.

The 5000 to 25000 psi range between the pump and injectors is the kicker for a filter to contend with.

so 20 days later and the truck did not blow up yet. its actually running better that when I bought it as a result of applying everything I learned about the 6.4 in the last months or so.

so did my check of the fuel today. drained about 1 qt . no water. no metal. but a few specs of what looks like black carbon the size of large pepper flakes were there.

filter looked fine but I replaced it anyway.

so until I find out if the pump or injectors are going to blow up, I been studying up on what it would take to do the work. I think if I can pull a turbine engine out of a helicopter and replace the fuel control systel and bearing packs.....injectors and fuel pump on this bus engine should be possible.
