Hit and Miss

I have a rebuilt carb (original) I just put on my 54 truck 239 v8 and it idles good but the second I try to give it gas it bogs down and almost dies. I can pull choke out about 1/2 the way getting the rpms up and when I hit the gas it doesn't bog down at all. Does anyone have any thoughts. I have tried adjusting the screws but still at idle or lower rpms it bogs down real bad.

Sounds like your venturies are plugged up or dirty. Think its time for a carb kit.
And then try the old trick air cleaner off race up engine and put ya hand over the top
to almost kill it. 50% chance minor dirt gets sucked out works sometimes...

Check your accelerator pump is working , does it shoot gas down the carb when you pump the pedal ?

Throw a vacuum gauge on it, it sounds like it could have a vacuum leak. Do you have vacuum wipers? Check the hose to them.

I had a vacuum problem and found that air was being drawn through the wiper motor.....so I eventually found it by having the wiper motor rebuilt........ just plug the port under the carb to make sure it is not the wiper motor

Verify fuel pump pressure and accelerator pump operation.

You are getting a lot of good solutions here. I had a similar problem. My truck would bog down and or backfire at high revs. I messed with my carb, my fuel pump, fuel lines and so on for almost a year.

It turns out my distributor was shot. The breaker plate wobbled and the shaft was worn. I bought a good 54 dizzy from Pinto Plumber, Dennis, and that solved my problem. I guess my 60 year old dizzy just wore out.

Good luck chasing down your problem. Keep us posted.

Just to tag on to what Abe said, your problems sound a lot like mine, and I received some of the same advice from the experts here. My truck is "stuck" in a body shop right now, and I haven't been able to try any of the suggestions yet. I will be following your thread to see if and how your problems are resolved.
