The only thing I found was that you could not use the vehicle as a principle means of transportation. Or what ever restrictions your insurance company has.

 

Here is what it says on the Pennsylvania application for antique registration
The following rules govern the issuance of antique, classic and collectible registration plates.
1. Definitions
A. “Antique Motor Vehicle” - A motor vehicle, but not a reproduction thereof, manufactured more than 25 years prior to the current year which has been maintained in or restored to a condition which is substantially in conformance with manufacturer specifications.

 

You are correct about NY, however in Va, there are two options, if you are using YOM plates you can register it as Antique and have the restrictions, or regular registration for normal use. It is one of a few, if not the only state that allows that.

 

Arizona doesn't care how you use your vehicle with the YOM plates as long as it's not for commercial use.

 

Yes for a $75 fee in PA you can register an era correct plate that you have in your possession on your Antique registered vehicle and maybe even Classic registered vehicle?. Plate has to be same year as the truck/vehicle it's going on. I just did it and registered as an antique. This exempts me from future registration and inspection (even though it needs to be safe!). I can drive it to shows, meets, gatherings and even as normal transportation, defined as 1 day per week. Insurance is required of course.

 

In Texas it was no big problem as long as the plates look good and are not listed as being used. This pair of plates were new and un-issued I bought on E-bay.

In WA, you can use YOM plates on vehicles that are more than 30 years old. They have to be original plates, not reproductions, but they can be restored. You're only required to run a plate on the back, and you don't have to display registration tabs. There is no yearly renewal, either.

When I did this for one of my other OT cars, I just took the plate into the local DOL, and they did the registration right there. It was pretty straightforward.

(Side note: you also have the option of getting regular Collector Vehicle plates, which is the standard WA design, with the "Collector Vehicle" legend on the left side. Again, no tabs or yearly renewal for these.)

However, the car/truck is then registered as a collector's vehicle, which has certain usage restrictions - you can't use the vehicle as regular transportation, or to carry a load, but you can drive it to shows, meetings, or for the "pleasure of others without compensation". There is no mileage limit, though.

I'm not sure how strictly this is enforced, since I see plenty of old trucks with collector plates hauling stuff from the Home Depot. Apparently the fine for doing this - if you get caught - is pretty hefty, since you're basically circumventing the yearly tab and registration fees with these plates.

 

I bought a 1951 florida plate for my 51 f1 at a pawn shop & it was in great shape-I also bought a 1953 florida plate for my 53 mercury convertible at a swap meet that was in great shape too-$25 each-I had to send the plates to talahasee to make sure that they were original-not stolen-& in good condition then I got both of them registered

 

Since I'm very close to street legal (barely) I'm looking for YOM Plates.
I found one 55 Missouri dealer plate cheap. I just had to email our DMV and they just gave me clearance to use that plate. So, I need to get it bought.
Although, I also found a couple of 55 Truck plates. Those might look cooler, so I will have them verified and buy one of those if they are still available. The dealer one would then become wall art.

I have been checking this out recently on the penndot page. I have a good 54 truck plate. I have to take a pic and send it to them for approval.
