Thinking of Doing a Cummins Conversion

Hi All
I've got a 92 F350 Crew Cab with the 460 and 5 Speed Manual Transmission. I'm Thinking of converting over to a 12 Valve Cummins and just looking for any input.

I've been thinking of doing one myself. There is a fair amount of information from other people's swaps and after looking through them, it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult. The hardest part in my area at least is finding a 12-valve

There are a lot of benefits to cummins over the 460, but is there any particular reason you're wanting to swap?

You might consider an IDI swap. Cheaper, easier, no formerly dodge parts contaminating your Ford.

When my 7.3 dies, I'm looking for a 6BT....I'll be 80 by then likely and the body will be rusted away, but I'll be ready.

Dont know if you've looked at costs or not but the main vendor of conversion kits (Destroked - THE Cummins Conversion Company : Home Page) puts the list at ~3500, that being said, some of this is not needed so would def be lower. But this will be in addition to finding the Cummins with wiring harness.

08-2010 Ford Manual Trans with Cummins 89-02 12V or 24V “kit ”

• Adapter Plate (with hardware) $795
• Flywheel spacer (required on ZF6) 99
• Exhaust Manifold 12V (moves turbo back and down) 305
o with long oil drain tube add 59.80
• Exhaust Manifold 24V (moves turbo back and down) 189
• Oilite pilot bearing 18
• Motor Mounts (with hardware) 186
• New 6.0L Starter (not required for 6.4L trucks) 129
• 1-wire 130A Alternator (internally regulated) 249
o No special brackets needed: Bolt-on
o Does not require external regulator
o Factory Dodge alternator will require external regulator
o 200A versions available 329
• Lower Radiator hose kit (with clamps) 110
• Tachometer Kit and Tachometer Box – required on 2008+ trucks 450
• Oil and Coolant temp sensor adapter fittings 40
• Throttle Cable 89
• Fan Shroud (powder coat optional) 08+ COMING SOON 320
• Optional barring tool holder (used to turn flywheel though starter hole) 29
• A/C lines (Available now SEND YOUR FORD LINES as cores) 225
• Air Dog 150 Fuel Pump 590
• Wire harness preparation (Send both engine harnesses) 12V 385
Wire harness preparation (Send both engine harnesses) 24V 485

o Approximate Total: 3400

A bunch of that cost is to adapt the Cummins to a Ford trans. Most of the threads I've seen have used an NV4500 trans from a Dodge, which avoids the adaptor cost / hassle (but adds the cost of an NV4500 trans...)

I was thinking of buying a 2 WD dodge to get the parts (Engine, Possible Trans, ECT) My 460 has a cracked block and 222,000 Miles on it so it needs replaced anyway. I do a lot of towing and don't like the Powerstrokes so.. it leads me to want a Cummins. It would be cheeper to do the conversion than get another Crew Cab Truck in any Decent Shape.

Your truck is 4WD from the pic in your first post here. If you use a trans from a 2WD Dodge you'll need to use a divorce-mounted transfer case. A llot of the swaps I've seen on here do that, but it does add another layer of complexity (and require finding a divorce mounted t.case, obviously).

I'm not sure what would be required if you started with a 4WD Dodge. You'd be able to mount a t.case directly to the trans, which would simplify things. But I don't know what t.cases would work.A Dodge one would, but I kind of think those are right-hand drop (but I could be wrong), which wouldn't work with your front axle. Don't know if you could attach your Ford t.case to it. There would definitely be options, but I don't know what the easiest / cheapest would be, so I don't know if a 2WD trans and a divorce mount t.case might not be the simplest.

I hope you are prepared to spend $5000+ on the conversion

Swap an idi with a turbo in. If you are still set on a lot of conversion time/work and money I'd suggest a dt360. It will be about the same cost, be more durable, make more power, be an international, and be way cooler because not everyone and their brother has one.

For what the truck is I'd look at Jasper Engines or the like and price out a remand 460. The cost would be minimal compared to a diesel swap and you would not have to re-plumb the truck and do all the wiring/component swapping to make it run a diesel . I've used Jasper engines several times by the way...I think they are the best for the money. Besides, if youre not a seasoned Ford mechanic you could get into a pickle with a conversion. That's just me though

With the Destroked conversion pieces, you can run your ZF 5 and your transfer case. Been looking into this for my 97 FSuperduty. l aready have the donor Dodge.

From the research I've been doing it doesn't look that difficult of a swap. Using a donor dodge I could easily use my Tranny and T-Case but would need different engine mounts and bell housing. The Electrical would be simple as the 6bt requires non and I could use a powerstroke starter. As for using a the international engine i don't like them thats why i was thinking of the cummins. Plus if I go to the cummins I have the understanding that I can get 20+ MPG.

The dt360's are somewhat hard to find though, right? Not to mention more expensive.

No, not at all.

I bought and sold 5 this year. Sold each one for $1500. Good luck finding a 6bt Cummins for that price

The DT360 was made from 1984-93 Came is S series International trucks and Busses
