Clutch Master Cylinder '96 F150 4x4

Was getting off the highway on my way home from work when my clutch pedal went all the way to the floor and stuck there. I pulled over to the shoulder & discovered the linkage from the clutch master cylinder to the pedal was broken.
The rod going into the master cylinder is made of plastic, and the ring that attaches to the pedal snapped when I stepped on the pedal that last time.
I know the new ones are made of metal. Do have to replace the whole clutch master cylinder, or can I take the metal rod out of the new one and install it into the existing cylinder? I've got the new part on order from my sister-in-law, she works for Napa and gets a big discount.
How hard is it to replace the clutch master cylinder?
