95 super duty auto transmission problems

Hi all,
Recently picked up a 95 flat-deck super duty with a 460 gas, not bad looking rig and traded it for a pallet of siding. Win. The transmission shifts a little rough and the overdrive light on the shifter flashes at me. Oil level is good and is clear and doesn't smell burnt. So, two questions, what transmission do I have (can't find a tag)? And any obvious reasons for the troubles I'm having? Thanks in advance, Alistair

It's an E4OD. No obvious fixes. The flashing OD-OFF light means that there's a transmission code stored. That code will help diagnose what's wrong.

Does the speedometer work properly?

Drivers side door jamb should have a data plate with transmission code. Let us know what it is and we can help you ID it.

Only thing I can find in the door jamb is the incomplete vehicle placard that indicates transmission code "E". How do I pull the code? Also, no speedo doesn't work.

Previous owner told me that the overdrive works if you drop it all the way down into 1 first, than back into drive. Not sure if you guys can make anything out of that.

Does the odometer display a number that doesn't change, or is it blank?

If the speedometer doesn't work, most likely the number won't change. What that _usually_ means is that the PSOM ("brains" behind the speedo/odo) is okay, but the VSS - vehicle speed sensor in the rear diff, is inop. That also serves as the speed signal to the transmission. So no speed signal will cause a code (and thus the OD-OFF flashing), and no speedometer, and hinky shifting. Might not be the _only_ problem, but that's where to start. Hmm, the F-SD may have a different axle, but I *THINK* it's like the pickups, and the VSS is in the rear diff, forward side toward the left. Check that connector, check the wiring as much as you can of it.

If you're lucky, and get the speed signal back, it _might_ solve the tranny problems.

Does anyone have a part # for this VSS? Or are they a scrap-pull part?

The F-SD has a Dana 80 diff, with the same VSS as the 10.25 diff.

The VSS is seldom the problem.
You did not say if the speedometer works or not. We need to know this.

Speedometer doesn't work. Odometer displays a number. The forums are awash with reports of inop speedometer + displaying odometer + E4OD shifting problems ==> VSS failure or wiring/connector issue.

Sounds like a bad rear end (bearings) or a bad PSOM or wiring or RABS module.
You will just have to test the VSS system. To test the RABS module just disconnect it.
