Transmission drain and refill

How many quarts to drain and refill an automatic tranny in a F-150 with a 4.2 V-6?

Are you removing the oil pan, clean, reinstall and refill ? That takes normally 5 quarts. The remainder will stay in the torque converter and lines.

Good to see you're still around Mark. It's been a long time since I posted in the tech forums, but I remember you being the transmission guru.

Both my Dad and I are thinking about trading for F-150's. I'm considering trading down from the big F-250 and he's thinking about going up from a Ranger.

I'm curious about the transmissions in the F-150's. I'm pretty familiar with the Torqueshift in the F-250's, but know zippo about anything else.

What transmissions do the F-150's run. Are they pretty reliable, handle towing well, etc? And how is maintenance. I remember on the 5r110 you had to do a hot flush because they had a thermostat. Are the F-150 transmissions the same or different?

Thanks,

The new F-150s use the six speed 6R80, I believe. I left Ford almost 9 years ago, so my information on the newer transmissions is quite limited. They were designed to tow, so I expect they do it well. I've never driven one, much less worked on it.

All newer Ford transmissions have thermostats. Those transmissions require a hot flush to change all of the fluid.

Thanks for the info. Neither of us can afford new trucks. We're both going to be looking around 2004-2008. That's why I was reading in this forum.

Those will be 4R70 varients. They have thermostats, too, but in the cooler line. They can be flushed without a heated machine.

Torque Converter Lockup

I've been searching for years for someone with knowledge of the R75 Ford Tranny in my 04 F150 4X4. I would love to have the ability to keep the converter locked up rather than searching in and out on the slight hills we have here on the Big Island, Hawaii. I have a kit in my 53 Ford F110 Hot Rod Custom with a 700R4 GM trans that I can keep locked up in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th any time. I have a push pull 2 speed rearend SWITCH ON MY GEAR shift that works great. Do ya know any way to convert the ECU or mechanically to do this with the R75 Ford Trans? Thanks, Renzo in Hawaii
