I wonder if curb weight of the various generations varied enough to make a difference.

as for 27mpg in a full-size pickup ... extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof (heck, i would even settle for ORDINARY proof).

Agreed. I can get 60mpg out of the Fusion going at a "slight downhill grade"
Which normally gets 25-30mpg

Here's my info, for what its worth:
96 F150 Single Cab Long Bed 4x2 with 4.9L, Mazda 5-speed, 2.73 rear end, stock tires, and no engine mods.

Around town (about 40% backroads and 60% highway) with just me and nothing in the bed, it'll consistently get about 15-16 MPG.

When I do my treks up to VT on I-93 to I-89, with just me and nothing in the bed, going about 65, it'll do about 16-17. I've never gotten more than that. I suspect I'd do better mileage-wise with a 3.08 rear end on the I-89 hills.

I gained 4mpg around town(almost identical to yours back roads and highways) going from a 3.08 to a 3.73 with an auto. 12.5 to 16.5.

FWIW, There's a guy (David) in the '80-'86 forum documenting 19-20 every day and low 20's highway.

I can believe that, hypermiler. I personally can't bring myself to drive like that and can't stand to get caught behind them. What I don't believe is a 351 4x4 getting mid 20's. If that is possible they would still be installing them in new trucks.
