2012 Navigator Retractable Running Board Motor

Hi All-

While I was away on business my wife called me in a panic to tell me the passenger running board was making a terrible noise and not going up or down. Eventually she was able to get it retracted and then lock them in the up position.

I came home and removed the running board and motor assembly and dug into it. Unfortunately it feels to me like there are teeth stripped off of a gear in the transmission (of the running board motor assembly).

Couple of question .. first .. I have been searching for a few days now for a good write up on solving problems with these running boards, and while there is a really excellent write up on the prior models, I haven't found one that covers the motors on the 07 - 14 years. There are a couple differences, and the main one I can't get past is the wedge/shaft key removal. Has anyone seen a good writeup on servicing these things for the 07 - 14 model years?

Second .. searching ebay is seems like about $670 is the cheapest i can find the replacement motor. Ouch. Anyone know any better alternatives?

Thanks All,
Chris

Im having the same problem. it sounds like I am smuggling a seal under my vehicle. Im guessing the gears are stripped.

What was your solution for the running board noise and function?

I took my running board and motor off of the passenger side. My driver side is still functioning fine (although I blast it pretty regularly with white lithium grease).

At one point I tracked down one of these suspicious on-line parts locators who said they could get me the whole assembly for about $300. I was about to order it but got nervous it was a scam and didn't ever order it.

I am hoping I'll get motivated enough to track them down again and I'll order with my Discover or Amex and issue a chargeback if they end up being a scam or something.

I tried to open the gear housing, but that plastic hex nut thing just won't budge for me. I just don't think there's any solution for me other than getting a replacement. And there's no way I'm paying what the dealer wants.

If you find a solution let me know .. I'm still looking.

I had both of mine replaced under the extended warranty with less than 90K on the clock. When they go next time, I'm replacing them with fixed running boards.
