HPOP trouble?

I have a 04 6.0 with 163K on it. Started yesterday morning, went out to work on land. Several hours later it started up, but cranked a little longer that normal. Went to lunch 15 miles away. After lunch would not start. Cranked good, but no start.

I have an Edge Insight CTS on her so the code was P2291 ICP to low. Coolant temp was around 165F.

Called a friend to come get us and went back with a car dolly to bring her home (about 35 miles). Decided to try one more time and she starts, so we drive home. Shut her down and try to restart, no go. Come inside start reading on the site about HPOP problems. Go out pull the ICP plug to trick PCM and it works, so I shut her down plug the ICP back in and now it starts. Engine temp was around 125F, let it warm up to 182F, shut it down and try to restart, no go either way.

This morning cold start works fine have around 1100PSI reading on ICP at 66F as engine warms up ICP PSI drops to mid 500PSI at 180F. Shut it down and no restart with ICP sensor plug pulled or plugged in.

What do I need to start looking at? Oil level good, Rotella T-6, Ford filters changed around 2K ago.

Sorry for the long post but I'm trying to get all the info answered first.

You can start out with a pressure test to find an HPO leak, but being an 04 you are probably looking at a weak HPOP.

What is your ICP while hot cranking.

Check the IPR valve first then air test the system. Is your ICP sensor on the right valve cover or under the turbo?

IPR is just behind/under the turbo. if you look behind and to the right of the turbo you can see it sticking out of the hpop cover. Should have like an insulated heat shield wrapped around it.

Here is good one from Ron about replacing the ICP early builds.
They are not as hard as they might look, helps if your forearms are not huge
I did mine, however mine ended up being the HPOP even though the ICP sensor was leaking oil badly. After replacement I could not get above 400 PSI

Dang, I see you have the easy ICP, my bad

1st... pull the IPR and verify the screen is in tact and not clogged.
2nd.. air test the system and probably replace the dummy plugs and standpipes... while there, do the STC fitting. Air test again to verify no leaks, drive truck.

IPR is under the turbo.
What is the IPR numbers once warmed up to full temps> probably about 24 or higher? You should be 580 ICP at idle, IPR at 21-23.

To dark to find IPR right now, but, at 188F I get ICP 575 to 585 PSI and IPR 23 to 24 %. I will look into finding the IPR under the turbo and see if I can get it out to check the screen, also I'll look back at the tech folder to see how to do an air test. Anyone near Ft Smith, AR that wants to help?

So it's a no-start at 188°, ICP at 575 and IPR at 24? If so check FICM sync and cam/crank sync or do the shortcut of checking fuel pulse width (FPW) all the sync's are required for the FICM to fire injectors (if a sync is missing FPW will be 0).

All I could do is offer advice. I'm not supposed to drive for 6 more weeks because of hip surgery, but I'd love to help. I'm about to go stir crazy sitting here at the house in Arkoma.

Your running ICP and IPR look fine. I've got an IPR socket here if you want to borrow it. It's very possible you have trash and/or a blown screen on the IPR causing it to hang open. Was there any oil in the ICP connector?

npccpartsman I can take any advise offered and possibly come by. I tore 3 of 4 ligaments in left rotator and am waiting for surgery date right now. They tell me it could be 3 to 6 months for total recovery and I know I'll drive the wife crazy in that time. She calls ne the energizer bunny, allways doing something.

Do you have the pigtail that connects to the IPR so I can close it to run an air test? I'm looking at a post by BISMIC in the tech section on how to do the test and where to listen for hissing.

I'll have to see what I can come up with, but I think I have that pigtail in my stuff somewhere. I'll see if I can dig the socket out of the truck before it leaves for the day and let you know. I'll PM you my phone number.

Quick update. Pulled the IPR with help from Tim (npccpartsman, loaned me a socket) and found the screen had trash in it and had separated from the valve. I have a new one (IPR valve) on the way. Hope to get it this weekend and put the truck back together.

Also while talking to Tim we discussed a problem about engine coolant temps climbing quickly while going up a mile long 9 degree hill to get to some land. I'll go from 195 or 200 to 225 plus in that short run empty or up to 235 plus pulling a 12K trailer. Tim thinks water pump may be weak, any other thoughts?

I figure that it's not a bad time to replace the pump and belt while waiting on the IPR.
