Help! 1 ton or 3/4?

I'm trying to figure out information on my truck. OK it is a1977 Ford F250 dually 4x4, 4 speed. My father said it was a 1 ton (he owned the truck for 17 years before me). He said that back then ford shipped them out as 3/4 tons to an outside factory and there they were made into 1 tons. Since owning it I had someone tell me it's a 3/4 ton. I can't look on the sticker inside the door because the body of the truck is not the original body. There is a stamp on the axel that just says 44 6CF. The engine is a 400 ci.

Ford did not build a 4x4 f250 dually in 1977. As far as I know they never shipped any out to any factory for conversion.

You need to get the frame stamped VI # and get some guru on here to decode it, only way to tell.

It is inline-ish with the alternator on the passenger side/top side frame rail. Or maybe back where the exhaust manifolds come close to the frame rail.

And can be on the top of the frame rail about where the passenger side seat track is bolted down in the body. Very hard to access though.

You have a common D44 front axle and since NO D60 front axle up there, I would say NO on being a F350.

The f350 srw and drw frames are made a bit heavier than f250 frames. The f350 frame is designed to carry 10,000 gvw in drw construction and 8900 gvw in srw mode. There is a frame rated at 8700 gvw but I think it's either a camper or trailer special. just because someone puts a dually axle under a truck doesn't make it a 1 ton, common mistake.

Thank you for the responses. I guess I'll climb under and look for other marking. A guy offered me 700 cash for my truck and I said ok then he says "Well since it's only a 3/4 ton it's only worth $500"
Didn't know if it's true or he thought I'm a female so I'm just dumb....I guess I'm just dumb haha
So now I'm on a mission to figure this out!

Back in the late '70s, early '80s ..... it was not uncommon for someone to do a swap from SRW to DWR on a F-250 or even a Chevy C-20 to enable it to haul a slide in camper or other load steadier. I've seen quite a few modified trucks like that. Eventually, Duallies caught on as manufacturers took note of the growing market.

I used to have a customer come in the gas station I worked always driving his early '60s Chevy 3/4 ton which had a 348 W motor and Clark 5 speed transmission from a bus and a two speed rear axle from some truck with DRW and some really nice looking rear fenders he fabricated ..... hi lowest gear was a crawl almost with engine singing .... it was pretty cool! He used it to pull a big boat or camper while hauling gear.

I've never seen a Ford F-250 with factory DRW though .....

He's the dumb one not you, the truck is now worth $900 as it has a dually axle already installed under it. If he gets upset too bad for him, he blew the deal by being a dumbazz. Don't think for 1 minute that there is an intelligence difference between M/F. We get to play that game because we get away with it, make the game harder to play.

Get us the vi# off the paper title and see if it matches the warranty plate (FYI that is NOT the vi# tag) riveted to the dvrs side door edge. I would guess you checked the paper title # against the door tag like most folks do when you bough tit?

And see if it match's the vi# stamping on the frame, if you can find it.

And then measure the rear frame rails just in front of the rear bumper and just aft of the leaf spring hangers.

Tell the $700/500 offer guy to talk to go buy a chebbie ya punk crack head. lol
