C6, goes strong, than slips, than nothing. N back again

I put a trans in my Mercury, it came out of a old Van I had, drove good 5 yrs ago or so... Anyways. Trans in the car slipped in all forward gears... But reverse went strong, leaked out of the front between the case and the pump. So figured I'd swap in the trans that was good. But used the converter, and the valvebody out of the trans that was in the car.

Anyways, took it for a drive. All was good. Spins the tires no slipping shifts awesome n all that. Than, it makes a funny noise, and nothing. No gears any direction. Shut it off, let it sit about 5 min.. And bam, it drives good again. Than it slips a bit in 2/3 and than nothing. Not forward or reverse gears... Let it sit. Start it back up n same thing. Goes like a raped ape, than slips a bit and nothing.

It has all new oil, I had drained the convertor too, adjusted the band, the modulator, the shift linkage, and new front seal. I'm at loss here.

There is enough fluid in it?

What kind of filter does it have?

Just for gits and shiggles look at the breather. If it is plugged you will have a high fluid level reading but be short a few quarts.

Will do, am also pulling the pan, and making sure the filter is good tomorrow. I'm thinking maybe the gasket let loose loose n it pulls air sometimes.

it could also have a bad pump that fails when it gets hot.

Really?? I'm not liking the sounds of that Tom. Would the pump go bad from just sitting? The trans worked good when pulled out of the old van 4-5 yrs ago.

Well, I think I've got it... Turns out the insides of that trans must have had a lot of crap in it... I pulled the pan and valvebody today, the filter was half plugged, and the pan had a lot of crap in the bottom. Cleaned it all up, put new filter in, and put 10-15 miles on it and all seemed good. So I think it's good to go now.
