Has anyone seen this before? I accidentally scraped the curb once on at my daughter's school. A thin layer of rubber started coming off of the side of the tire and looks like a whitewall underneath. I took it to the dealer and they said that it was "normal" with a tire scrape. I have never seen this.
Yes it's very normal when the tire gets curb rash. The factory tires are just a little worse than the usual. Still unsure why Ford even does a white outlined tire in this day and age. Only way to make it go away is with a new set of tires.
Thanks, Yeah. I figured it would be normal if I really gouged the tire and figured it would be in one place on the tire. But I barely scraped it in the one place. The rest started to "peel" off. I just got off the phone with Michelin and they are having me take it to one of their dealers. I'll see what happens.
I run those tires on my 2012. 70,500 miles on them so far, with a good bit of tread left. I've scrubbed the sidewall on the right front a time or two entering my banks drive through. Never left a mark on the tire.
Good luck.
Yes that is normal. Although it generally take multiple scrapings of the curb, or one good long hard scrape. There are companies now that will take a white letter tire or tires with a standard white wall and cut the side walls down to make the fat white walls of the 40's and 50's.
