Putting 96 5.8 into my 86 bronco

I have 1986 bronco came with 5.8 4v carb, had issues and now im putting 5.8 efi from 1996 f150 into bronco. I want to use the orig. c6 and do not want to change anything in interior such as dash or column. I have removed the wires for air bag and lights from harness underhood. My plan is to connect my orig ignition and gauges to the new engine harness. Is this going to work like this?
Or will i have to do something special to for the gauges to work and the obd-2 to work properly?

With the exception of the Check Engine Light in the dash nothing is connected to the computer (PCM) so you should be good to go. I assume the '86 instrument cluster has a CEL socket?

If I understand you correctly you want to keep the EFI from the donor but retain the the ignition from the '86?

Yes you are correct, i want to keep interior original including steering column and dash.
What is cel socket?
I read somewhere that i had to use the 96 cluster but i just couldnt see why
Thanks

I was referring to a spot in the existing instrument cluster for the Check Engine Light. 5L equipped trucks in this vintage were EFI so there should be one I assume. No need for a specific 1996 cluster IMHO.

So now we are back to my biggest question. .....what about your EFI goals?

you would have an easier time going to a mustang mass air setup running an A9L/A9P ecu and soforth. the 96 obd-II is a nasty beast.

Yes rla my intensions are to run the complete 96 efi. Probably keep it mostly stock for now. The only thing i will modify is a kn air filter but not so much for performance as is to save space because i am making a water tite box for the comp. to be under hood. I thought i was gonna cut a hole in the firewall but there really isnt a good place to do that. I think the 86 5L efi was on inside of steeringwheel but my 96f150 wires not long enuf.

Hey kemical
Thanks for reply
Im probably going to keep it mostly stock, so would i still benifit from the mustang computer? Why is the mustang mass air different? I mean what makes it better? Is it just that the comp. is easier to deal with?

Thanks rla
I did not even think about check engine light.
So as far as cockpit wiring goes i know i will retain the inertia fuel switch and check engine light.
Is there anything else anybody can suggest keping from 96 wiring inside?

I put a 96 f250 5.8 in an 82 f150 but I used all the wireing from the 96 but the f250 is sd not maf. Right now I'm putting the 5.8 and e4od in my 78 but again its sd. I used all the wireing just left things unplugged using the 96 cluster with the 78 ignition switch when u start getting into it. Its pretty simple. I guess I put a 97 f250 5.8 with a c6 in a 84 f150 used everything stock for a little bit then I tried to use the 96 dash and failed but all the stock dash worked. Used the stock sensors on the engine. But no CE light I just cut every thing that's not needed in the harness

There are a lot differences between a OBD-I PCM and a truck OBD-II PCM. More than you care to deal with. The gas tank Purge Solenoid is replace with a Vapor Management Valve. The EGR feedback changes from positional to real EGR flow (DPFE). The OBD-II computer is expecting to see an electronic controlled transmission versus a mechanical C6.The OBD-II PCM is looking for the mis-fire sensor on the harmonic balancer, the Mustang PCM has no clue.....

The list goes on. No way to keep the older Duraspark ignition and keep either PCM happy or operational. You are in a jump in with both feet position or stay stoned aged with a carb. and mechanical transmission. Unless you are a wiz at programming to delete the above mentioned sensor/operations you are doomed to feeding money into a pit IMHO.

Cheaper to keep the carbed engine. You can buy ALOT of gas for the $$ you end up pouring into the frankenstein you envision.

mustang mass air is easier to install in this situation. there are a number of kits out there as well to do this.

like mentinoned OBD-II is very integrated and wants info from many different parts of the rig. Also like mentioned the SD system is simpler as well.

I like the idea of EFI in the older rigs, just gotta look at what system will be the most trouble free not just with initial setup but troubleshooting down the road.
