Junkyard score I hope...

Went to the local salvage yards today. I scored 2 injection pumps with all the hard fuel lines, a coolant & windshield washer tanks. Also picked up a throttle cable, front tank and rear tank fuel sending units all for $70. The parts came off of 7.3 IDI trucks. One pump came off an old U-Haul. The engine was clean, like a recent rebuild. The pump is rebuilt by International Fuel System. The sending units are in good condition.

Did I do good? Also they sell injectors for $5 each. Is it worth getting a spare set? Just incase I ever need to send off a set to get rebuilt? That is why I picked up the pumps. Part hoarding I guess.

Also how should I prepare and store the pumps for long term storage. I really wis I had the money to buy a couple of those old engines.

Thanks for the info, looks like I'll be making another trip back there. Is there anyway to tell if U-Haul or previous owner put in the reman engine? Also is there anyway to tell if injectors are good?? Trying to save what I can before it gets crushed.

That is definitely a score. I will pull and save any decent looking 7.3 IP or hard line set that I find. I plan to keep my truck forever and as the years go by a rebuildable IP will become harder and harder to find. For that price critical spares are a great idea. If the injectors look decent I would say grab those also. You might also want to grab an extra oil cooler since the prices are decent.

If the injectors are cheap, keep em. They can be worth $50-100 as a core. These days, we can rebuild injectors with new wear components(just the pintle and nozzle) and they will be as good as new.

Looks like I will be making a trip back to score more parts. Thanks guys, I hate to hoard but I love the old 7.3 idi. I hope someday I can build one up to its potential.

Look for a turbo also. Just make sure you get everything. Turbo,up pipe, down pipe, oil lines, CDR block of plate, filter housing, boost gauge, EGT gauge if the the gauges are there

I haven't been lucky enough to find a turbo yet. I still keep looking every time I go. One day I may find one.

That's easy if you are looking for a truck turbo, but not a van turbo.

Yes the truck one is easier to find than one for a van. I finally got mine installed

Look on the top of the block, driver's side behind the IP, where the engine serial number is. If there's a plate there, or looks like it's been filed and re-punched with a new number, that _may_ indicate that it's a reman engine.

The uhaul might have a reman engine in it. A few years back Uhaul apparently retired all their 7.3 trucks and liquidated their stock of IDI parts, many of us here bought a bunch of their stuff. I got one of their reman IP's and a set of injectors, although I had issues with the injectors. IP worked great though.

Went to the junk yard yesterday and scored a set of injectors for $24!!! Now to save some cash so I can get them rebuilt or something. Also scored the stock air intake setup so I'm not always sucking in engine bay hot air. The U-Hual was a bust. I pulled out an injector and it was rusty. So I didn't bother with looking into anything else on it. I may try to get an oil cooler.

Any suggestions on how to make sure it's good. I don't want to buy one that's junk. Rebuilding it would be done anyways.

I'm just parts hoarding.... Never know when I may need them.
