exhaust manifold to header leak

having problem with exhaust leak where the headers meet the manifolds on my flathead 8.
it seems the gaskets available (ford P/N 9450) has a larger ID than my manifold. The bolt pattern is identical, however the inner ID is too big and casues a leak.
Any suggestions...............it looks like there may have been a smaller pipe at time, as the part no. is 9448. But can't find anyone who stocks them.

If you are looking at the parts CD, it's confusing. The gasket set 18-9433, is described as having (9) 18-9448-A gaskets. The same gaskets are used at the manifold-to-block and exhaust pipe-to-manifold joints. The only listing for 9448 is something for the later Y-blocks. FelPro sells a set of exhaust gaskets under p/n MS 8028 B. Advance and others carry it.

The stock exhaust pipes I've seen had a short spigot that went inside the manifold to seal the gasket from the gases. Does yours have that?

I ran into that exact problem. Got tired of looking and bought some exhaust gasket material and made my own.

If you do find the correct part number please post it up.

Yes my header pipes do have a small spigot as you describe. I will trot on down to my auto parts store tomorrow and order up a set. I am just tired of that P.I.A. of an exhaust leak.
you know, of all the forum sites I belong to the Ford Forum, hands down is the best for getting quick and accurate responses.

Thanks.

The FelPro set may also be larger diameter than the pipe. I measured some spares and the ID is 2".

2" is the same size as what I have received from several catalog suppliers.
Looking at the flange at the spigot, the I.D. of the gaskt needs to be 1 5/8" to maybe
1 3/4".

I'd go to Midas or Meineke and ask for a couple. I'm sure NAPA or even Autozone has them, but digging out the p/n might take all day.

One of the parts stores broke out a catalogue with actual size drawings and I still didn't find a match.

They sold me a sheet of gasket material that had a metal center. I had to cut hole first with a hole saw. Then cut the outside with scissors. No label on material.

The large gaskets in those sets is for the passenger car applications. I've always used the same ones as goes next to the block for the exhaust pipes on the trucks. The set number that Ross listed should include everthing needed for car or truck. NAPA has it as FPG MS8028B. - Bob
