4.6 hesitation when cold?

'01 4.6L, 32K miles. When the truck is cold, it sometimes hesitates on acceleration. Not hard acceleration, just pulling out into traffic. Seems to happen when turning left and accelerating, but could just be a coincidence. Any ideas? TIA

Wes

4.6 hesitation when cold?

Hi Wes and welcome to FTE

How bad does it hesitate? Does it seem to just not respond to the throttle or?
Have you ever tried cleaning the MAF?

4.6 hesitation when cold?

It feels like the engine is going to stall, so I would characterize it as a serious hesitation. I have not done anything to the vehicle. It is new to me, had it about a month. Again, it has never done this after a couple of miles running, only when cold.

4.6 hesitation when cold?

I would maybe get it scanned for codes, check the MAF and maybe try cleaning it.

4.6L hesitation problem solved

This hestation problem ended being a bad Differential Pressure Feedback Exhaust (DPFE) sensor. Apparently it showed no flow and the EGR opened more to increase flow, thus causing a hesitation with the motor. For 2 years I never had a code set, but finally did and it pointed to the DPFE. I changed it and the hesitation problem disappeared.

Ford has redesined the DPFE sensor, so the replacement looks different from the old. You will find the sensor on the drivers side near the firewall attached to two small tubes that rise from the exhaust. It costs $31.

Hope this helps someone out.

Thanks for letting us know what you found
I've replaced lots of DPFEs but I don't think I've ever seen one that didn't set a code quite quickly.
