250 to 300 compatability

sorry guys I really know nothing about the 250, but coworker has a 250 6cyl from a 1977 car with ultra low miles and wants to put it in his 1987 F150 in place of the 300 6 cyl efi.

I don't think it will work or bolt up to his C6 trans. but I do not know and he does not have internet access.

so here it goes..................

info, comments, advise all welcome. I hope its a noway! as then I don't need t help him

thanks in advance

The 250 shares the same bell housing bolt pattern as the 300's and the SBF V8's. But that's the only thing it shares with the 300. The motor mounts are different and so is everything else. The worse feature has to be the intake that's built right into the cylinder head.

Going from a 300 to a 250 is a major step backwards in performance and durability. If I remember correctly that age 250 has cast connecting rods. I had a 78 Granada with a 250. It broke one of those cast rods. It was so violent when it happened it punched a hole in the block and tossed a big chunk of the rod right into the frame rail of the car. That was my last 250!

If it was a 240 sure! But a 250 no thanks!!

thanks Ted:

that is pretty well just what I wanted to hear, hopefully the "all custom" other than the bell housing will be enough to talk him out of the swap.

I really didn't want to be part of it. have enough of my own stuff on the go right now already.

cheers James

The 250 can be built up but it's just not a truck engine. In stock form it just wouldn't be a good choice in a full size truck. And with those connecting rods it's like a hand grenade that you just don't know when it will go off.

If his 300 is bad, he's much better off just finding a good used one to replace or pick up a cheap core and rebuild it.
