Someone have a part number for the Stantor GP relay? Someone also suggested a Western Plow. I'm pretty sure mine needs replaced, though I'm doing the glow plugs and UVCH now anyway as two harnesses had pins burned up.

I will forwarn those stancores really are awesome, but if you have old worn VCGs, they typically cause the pins to burn out fairly quick. I have had a stancor for 4 years on new VCs and its been great, not a single problem since.

That's excellent news as I've just got the curb side gasket and harnesses replaced and will do the driver side in the next couple of days. I'll get the Stancore ordered.

it is possible the contacts in the GPR are shot like in the picture of the rotating disc, or you may have a dirty connection or corroded power wire on the hot side of the relay

Why would that be ? 12v is 12v .?

Volts do not indicate amps. If a relay is old and has "iffy" connections, it can still carry 12 V, but the amperage passing through the relay will be reduced, as some of it turns to heat (in the relay) as a result of poor connection. The old, poor connections at the UVCH may handle that reduced amperage just fine. Then a person installs a nice new relay with great connections, and the amperage delivered to the UVCH is increase, and they are no longer happy.

exactly. sorry i did not see that question earlier.
a bad relay can send 12 volts but only 50 amps to the glow plugs through the under cover harness and they will be happy. the glow plugs may not work very good, but the UVCH will be happy.
now put a new stancor relay in the mix, and all of a sudden the UVCH is seeing 12 volts with 150 amps. it will get unhappy very quickly and let out all it's smoke

Experience and amperage draw.... go compare between stock and what the stancor is rated for. Your answer lies there!

I've tried putting the magic smoke back in.. never works....

On a side note... if you've ever seen a smoke test kit, designed for finding air leaks and such. Well, we had a new tech at work and had him actually using one to try to "recharge" the smoke on a relay...
