Propane usage

If you have two tanks on your rig, do you run off one tank at a time or do you select the center position to use both tank equally. My last camper was sold 10 years ago. I used one side at a time. That way when I went out again I only had to fill one tank. I always started each trip with two full tanks. you never know what may happen to the weather that will require the heater to run and burn it up faster.

Mine will direct towards one tank. That is generally what I do.

But with the other tank on it will automatically switch over if needed.

In the winter I will turn on both tanks at night so if one does run out then the other will start feeding.

I don't fill them up till then are empty.

I think that is the most common usage pattern, although some folks shut off one tank so they don't run both empty. I see this as just a matter of preference with arguments both ways, but one not being better than another.

This is living dangerously! Running out of propane for cooking or heat would leave not any explanation or justification enough to make the trip a livable experience with the DW. So, I always keep one tank full just to avoid such a catastrophic situation...

I should clarify. I don' let them both run empty, just use one till it is gone. Then switch to the full tank and get the empty filled back up.

This exactly, I thought that was how everyone handled the propane situation.

X2

I've heard / read of lots of people leaving the second tank turned off, I assume so they'll be sure when the first one is empty?? Kinda defeats the purpose of having the auto change over. I just check occasionally to see if the indicator has turned red , then I know it's time to get one filled (or swap it out for a full one).

I do the same, otherwise there is not much value in have the auto change-over. I have found once I know our pattern of usage, it is not difficult to keep an eye on things.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't know if I have an auto changeover or how to tell if I have one,

I actually leave the second tank off. I've been in a situation where I had a leak, had it corrected and in the mean time, the primary tank went empty. I later went to VT, and in the middle of the night we ran out of propane. That was a very cold night. I now leave one tank off so I know when I'm getting low. If I have to get up and change over tanks, so be it. At least I have heat when its 34 degrees out.

Use one, second off, when first runs out, switch to second and fill first when I can. Don't over think it and you will not have a problem.

I didn't even know those existed.

I'm no expert, but I run both tanks open on auto changeover. So far I'm impressed with the fact that I'm still on 30# tank number one. Our first trip the heater ran a lot, we use the stove here and there and the fridge is always on when moving, but I use the electric water heater whenever possible.

A buddy who has 20# tanks has been burning through them................but he's been starting his fridge on propane 2 days before every trip. He said someone told him he couldn't run the fridge off a 15 amp service. He's been corrected and will save some propane now!
