Oct. chat & BS thread

Well, well, I get to start another month!
How's everybody doing on this lovely, cool fall morning? Loving the temps, but we need a little rain in a bad way. Burn bans all around and dust at least 6" deep.
Time to put up the party barge for the winter and start using the Jon boat with the cab on it, life's rough living on the riverbank.

Time to start adding to the firewood stacked on the porch. A few more loads like this should do it.

When I got off the train Saturday morning in Independence (KS) it was 43F. Mr Conductor (the guy I share an "office" with) must have poor blood circulation because he was bundled up like it was down in the 20s. Yes, I was drinking a cup of coffee...but I love this time of year running around in a t-shirt. The humidity haze is gone from the sky and you don't need the stinking a/c to remain comfortable. Though it soon will be dull & grey all the time with that frozen crap threatening frequently. Anyone checked a persimmon yet?

Be careful what you ask for. Surely you haven't forgotten about this spring. And with all that firework your dragging to the homestead...I would think more water would be the last thing you'd want.

Hmm.... Might have to walk down to my neighbor's and grab a persimmon later.
Hey, I did say "a little rain" ;-) our water levels are so low right now that its difficult to get to the boats.
And as soon as I get the racks loaded, I don't care how wet it gets, just how high. :-)

My granny always told me that persimmons weren't good until after first frost. Those things are absolutely LOADED here and hitting the ground like blackbird bombs. I need to check out the seeds to see what winter's gonna look like....

Checked the neighbor's tree yesterday and it looks like the wildlife has stripped it. I'll check out one of my trees when I get to Mount Holly today. Gotta be at least one left.

You would think. There aren't any near the house or I'd cut one open to find out.

I've never eaten one, just used a couple to forecast the weather. And a bunch of them for projectiles at the cousin's place years ago.

I cut several open yesterday, nothing but spoons. Looks like we'll have a snowy year. As far as eating persimmons, a little too seedy for my taste, but they do make some excellent jelly.

Can't say that I've ever seen one around here, but I'm sure they're around.

Snow might be fun, ice no, but i could handle a snow day or two.

Why can't I just retire now and enjoy these beautiful days? I really don't want to go back to work. It's really putting a crap on my leisure actives here lately. Maybe if my Plan B retirement plan would come through (win the lottery) I could indeed retire now. At some point they've got to pick the right numbers.

I *think* the blue oval was added back in July, but I don't remember directly. Seems like I made a comment about it, but I'm too lazy to go look for it. I'm not afraid to admit I'm lazy...occupational hazard of being an engineer.

Guess it makes up for just about loosing it all in May.
