The E4OD will need a different PCM to control it where the others won't. I have seen several threads on trans swaps where people have ditched the crappy M5OD. I'd like to pitch mine in the trash and put in a ZF5. Maybe at some point in the future....

Agreed, you name it, I've done it and then some with the Mazda trans. I've neutral dropped it, bang shifted, missed gears, whooped some butt and hauled close to 1200 pounds of metal with this trans and other than the shift forks are giving me trouble now with shifting it's still Mint. What do you people do to these things? Do you load up a truck full of wood and then try and do a burnout with it? Because I just don't get how people break them. Not ragging on you by any means OP I'm just that curious.

My issues are most likely due to the PO. It looks like someone has been in it before because of the silicone gooped around the tail housing. It leaks and shifts relatively poorly. Even after replacing the shifter bushings it has gotten sloppy again. I blame the PO because I found the leaf springs on both sides broken in half. Also I wish 1st gear was lower.

Sounds like the PO has done a number and a half to this truck then. Do you know what they used it for prior to your purchase of the truck? Sounds to me like they gave this truck some serious crap then.

To OP: I'm taking out an M5OD and putting in C-6 in my 89 F250 4X4 so I may have some measurements that will help. The M5OD without transfer case is 29 1/2 inches long; with BW 1345 transfer case total length is 47 inches. Distance from the front of the transmission to the center of the cross-member is 25 inches.

My C-6 measurements may not help because it is an '84 transmission and they changed the transfer case adapter length in later years. My transmission length without TC is approx. 26 inches. Maybe someone can tell you the difference in length of TC adapter for later years.

I'm using a Hurst Pro-Matic shifter with the truck length handle for gear change duties so everything will still be on the floor.

My M5OD gave me no trouble but my age and left knee condition prompted the swap. Also I had an '84 4x4 with a good motor and transmission and rusted frame, so the decision was fairly easy.

My M5OD is on craigslist right now but no bites yet.

The transmission has been bad about leaking from the transfer case adapter and the whole thing is warped from using it to realign a stacker (so proud it actually did it) and I would love a ZF5 but it's not going to happen is there a stand alone controller for an e4od

I thought only f150s came with the m5od. Did someone swap one into your truck or is one of us mistaken?

Whistler, do you know when then adapter changed? My '87 Bronco has a C6. I can go measure it tomorrow if the rain ever lets up.

F250 with the semi floating 10.25 sterling under 6600 gvw with a 5.0 could end up with a m5od. I had one funny that the Sterling died first lol

My F250 is a "light duty" with a 5.0 that leaks like a sieve. That's why the engine is coming out too. The transfer case adapter length changed but I don't know when.

For what it's worth I realize it's my fault it's warped but it's the third transmission I've had in the truck and it's at 330,000
