Opinions on 5w-30 synthetic use in the 6.0L

ey guys,

My friend offered me several cases of this oil: https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/m...il-delvac-1-le and since it meets the standards of heavy duty diesel engines, I was going to try it for my next oil change along with a bottle of archoil friction modifier.

Has anyone used this type or weight synthetic in their rigs?

It is free but I wanted to get some opinions on the viscosity change and potential benefits/drawbacks to the viscosity.

Thanks

****Crappy part is I just changed my oil 1k miles ago with the mobil 1 synthetic 5w-40 but am going to do the BPD oil cooler quicker than I thought....so the oil will be changed again******

Many use 5w40 Synthetic with great success. Repeating what has been reported here, test reports show that 5W40 shears down to a 5W30 after 5k miles. The 6.0 is hard on oil.

I'm not sure id run it it my truck if it were free. It'll probably be fine, but that's a $8k engine.

Money-Pit is using 10w-30 and reporting easier starting. I've been considering at least going to 10w-30 after my 5w-40 is gone.

Delo 5w30 is pretty good stuff. I definitely would use it if it were free.

Thanks guys. I have read through the spec sheets over on mobil's site and it is rated and exceeds all the spec requirements of this engine. It is a DELO lubricant and they run it in all their fleet at my friends work. Sometimes I wonder if I tend to overthink things

Not sure if the link I provided works but here it is again https://mobildelvac.com/en/motor-oil...vac-1-le#5W-30

I've had 5W-30 in my 7.3L during the winter months here in South Dakota. Used oil analysis reports showed good results - but my 7.3L ICP would max out around 3100 psi though. The 6.0L goes higher than that when running her hard or towing heavy and that's what tends to shear the oil viscosity over time. But even when the 6.0L shears the 40 weights down to a 30 weight viscosity it tends to stable out in the middle 30 weight range. You'll like the winter cold starts better with the 30 weight if you live in a northern climate. If you wanted to be sure you could easily send in a used oil sample at 3,000 miles for $20-$25. It's easy, plus you can get a nice snapshot of your engines health.

Just read over the specs in the link you provided. It meets the CJ-4 specification for Diesel engines and it has a very high viscosity index of 168. It should hold viscosity nicely.

Thank you white buffalo! That is a lot of great info and good idea on the oil analysis.
I live in SoCal so you can guess my winters here are pathetic to say the least.
