I run true 35" tires on my 2V V-10 EX, it has the 4R100 but both it and the 5R110 share the same OD ratio. With my 4.88 gears I turn 2400 RPMs at 70 MPH in OD, the combination of the 35"s and 4.88 gears nets an effective ratio of 4.39. Our Ex is our tow rig, we pull an 11k TT and use OD for 95% of our towing miles without issue. The change from the stock 3.73 gears to the 4.88 was like getting a new truck, the higher RPMs allow the trans to stay in OD at speed while climbing grades. The deeper gears improved our towing mileage from 6.5 to 7.5 MPG up to 8 to 9.25 MPG and only cost me about 1 MPG while running unloaded on the highway. Pickup and drivability is much better (and more fun!) with the deeper gears.

I know Mark has talked about not necessarily using the tow/haul mode with the 5r110 when hauling or towing, but don't recall seeing his approval of heavy towing in OD with the 4r100.
Would like to re read his thoughts if you have that thread?
The OP has a 2005 and therefore a 5r110w

If I remember correctly it has 2 overdrive gears. Anything over a 1to1 ratio is a overdrive gear..

When I pulled with my 4r100, i'd usually pull in 3rd and manually downshift into 2nd at about 52 mph to keep it from shifting back and forth. I wasn't comfortable pushing that OD with that much weight.
After towing with a 7k boat and a 10k toy trailer for years, 320k later I'm still crossing my fingers. Changing ATF regularly too.

The OP has a 5r110 which is a much more stout transmission.

@Mark Kovalsky some insight on this please.

Why not? What happened to it?

You don't remember correctly.

Both the 4R100 and 5R110 have only one overdrive gear. That ratio is 0.71:1.

4R100 ratios
2.71:1
1.54:1
1:1
0.71:1

5R110 ratios:
3.11:1
2.2:1
1.54:1
1:1
0.71:1

Mark,
I indicated no overdrive because his tow/haul doesn't lock out the 6th gear. The op's original post discussed locking out the overdrive, hence the reason I thought he had a 4r100.

Can you reply and clarify Coop's 13th post about not needing to lockout OD when pulling, because of the cooling circuit?

No, I can't. I don't remember ever saying anything like that.

I have said that if the trans stays in overdrive without frequent downshifts you can tow in overdrive. The 4R100 trans can cool in either 3rd or overdrive.

Thanks. I guess it goes back to original design as to why Ford would include an OD lockout or tow/haul option.
No reason to add an expense unless there was a value to the customer.

I'd definitely go with 4.88's if you are running 35's, as that's what I run in mine and I've been pleased with it. The 5-Star tuner is great to have as well, because it has towing/eco/performance settings for whatever octane fuel you like to run (plus you can change the tire size setting to get speedo accurate again). I burn 87 octane and leave mine set on the performance setting, it tows just fine there (also have headers, y-pipe, and AFE air intake). Cruising at 55mph the engine hums just perfect at 2k rpm's. It's fairly hilly around here, so I leave my OD off when towing.

Have you looked into an underdrive unit? For towing?

It is a no brainer. Go with the 4.88's.

Due to the fact that we have stock 31.5" tires we went with the 4.30's, but if I had it to do over again we'd go with a 4.88 due to the fact that we're towing heavy about 80% of the annual mileage that our truck is driven.

Given the fact that you're towing heavy much of the time and have 35" tall tires I'd even consider 5.13's. Sounds crazy but towing heavy most of the time with the tall tires I'm thinking 5.13's wouldn't be too much gear.

I ran 5.38 gearing with my 5.4L and 38's while towing my boat around 7K and never had an issue.

I have to agree with all of the 4.88 suggestions.
