1.0 housing and turbo questions
I have a '97 CC and I bought a 1.0 housing a couple years ago that I've never got around to putting it on. Now I want to put it on and I have a couple questions. Is this still a good thing to do? And should I rebuild the turbo while I'm doing it?
I'd like the turbo to spool faster, I have 3.55 gears and a 6.0 intercooler. The truck runs great, has 238k, and much of my mileage is towing a 5th wheel or loaded with a big camper and towing a Jeep. Current mods are simple, downpipe, 4" exhaust, Banks chip, and the IC. Don't plan to do injectors, might one day get a better chip, might do an intake. Plan to have this truck for a very long time.

The Super Duty came with a .84 housing and a wastegate. I've had a couple of OBS Powerstrokes for quite a while and changing to the 1.0 housing was a popular mod. I've had mine sitting in a box for over 3 years but never got around to putting it on. I was wondering how soon people are rebuilding turbos and should I go ahead and rebuild mine now. It looks like some folks have had turbo problems with the faster spooling so maybe that's my answer. When the turbo went out, what went bad? The bearings, seals, what?
I have both 3.55 gears and an intercooler, so I really thought the truck would benefit from the faster spooling. The SD's with the .84 housing spool faster than our trucks, what's different about their turbos that they can spool faster and not go out? Is this really an issue or is it related to high mileage or bad luck?

I have one in my 96 that is essentially stock, and I love it. I got it off of Glenn IIRC. Been running it for several years, maybe 60,000 miles. I have no idea on the age of the turbo, I've put 80,000 miles on the truck without a turbo issue.
I think you should really consider an intake upgrade though.
