Here is an different project for you fellas to contemplate.

Alright, i have a friend that has an actual military slantback humvee. Its got the pos 6.5 diesel in it.

He wants to put a better diesel in it and i guess they make a 6.6 duramax conversion, but a donor truck is advised so you have everything. Same applies to cummins, they make a conversion but ya need a donor. Now all bs aside, we all know either of these engines is an improvement over the 6.5.

That said, how much harder would it be to put a 7.3 in that humvee. I searched the web and couldnt find anyone that has done it.

He has the means, and has an incredibly talented fabricator at his disposal. Obviously you can make anything fit if you have the $$.

What do you guys think? Should i suggest to him he put a 7.3 in it over dirtymax or cummins?

the T444E is by far much better then the other too engines by far, yes the scummins MIGHT have better gas mileage but not the longgevity of the 7.3, granted you will need to fab up engine mounts and all that, plus you will need an ECU for the new engine and trans combo, but its all possible...donor truck MAY be good to have but not entirely needed, you just mainly need the 7.3 and all associated bits, plus a trans that goes to it and ECU and you can fab the drive line after...Hummvees (especially the gen 1) are going to be about the length of a normal F250 CC with short bed IIRC...possibly the 6 foot bed oh and if you do go the 7.3 route be sure to take TONNES of photos and LABEL EVERYTHING so you know what goes where, and be sure to post pics...

If a 7.3 could be stuffed into an F100 (see post #52): https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...project-4.html then sure! Why not! Personally, I would go with a 12 valve Cummins. Easier and cheaper to make decent power, mechanical IP, and fewer, if any computer controls.

Ill keep ya posted, i have a feeling hes gonna go w the duramax though. But 7.3 donors seem cheaper than duramax donors.

Duramax will be even more computer controlled then our 7.3, but I wish him best of luck!

I'd go with the Duramax just because somebody has already figured it all out.

Best practical solution is the 12v Cummins or the Duramax, best display of craftsmanship would be the 7.3, most hi-freakin-larious would be Olds 350 diesel.

he could also drop a 7.3 IDI in there with an aftermarket turbo. the non turbo IDI is a vast improvement over the 6.5, drop a turbo on it and it brings the IDI up on par with first gen 7.3 powerstroke.
then he will not need a computer or any fancy wiring modifications.

I'm with whoever else said a 12 valve Cummins at least that's what I'd do if I were building it out of my garage on a budget.
Since he's already contemplating a duramax and complicating matters why not go a common rail Cummins pre 6.7 or 2007.5.
One thing that needs to be said is how he plans on using this truck. Believe it or not his age would be very helpful also (as that can play a big role).
Also we all know how good of an engine the 7.3 is BUT only a handful of guys here have owned multiple types of diesels. This is my personal opinion if I were doing a swap like this... A 7.3 would never cross my mind

Fighting words ^^^^^^^^
