Detroit Locker or standard?

Hey All,

So I have the original factory axle of my f250 4x4, Dana 60 4.56 gears. Its a flat bed truck, drive dirt roads and just around town when it seems like a day to take the truck out.

I have had a second complete axle the the shop for a while now. Dana 60 4.56 gears but it's a Detroit Locker axle. So with new brakes/brake lines and an inspection of the bearings this second axle it couple potentially be swapped right in.

Not sure of all the pros/cons of a locker rear but was hoping someone on here would be able to chime in whether the swap would be beneficial or not.

Thanks.

Are you short of traction now? Getting stuck?

Pros both rear wheels turn at the same rate all the time. this makes cornners intersting and you will get wheel hop not to good for driving on hard streets. This is the reason they came out with Air lockers. If you are not having any problems now I would not change it.

Older style detroits will click a little while turning due to their ratchet. But if you have loud exhaust or no sound deadening or poor hearing you might not even hear it. Newer style detroits won't click. I don't what changed exactly. A Detroit will allow both axle shafts to get equal power all the time but will allow one tire to turn slower than the other one so you can corner without getting in a bind.

If you're talking about a completely locked up axle it's not to good of an idea. Especially if you drive in town or tow frequently.

This is only true with a spool (or welded spiders). A locker will allow for speed differentiation on the street.

I swapped a locker in mine and would never go back.
