Marc after you pull the lock out off. There is a spring clip that holds the locking spline in the hub. Its hard to see with grease packed in there. Its in a groove just behind the face of the hub. This picture may help.

I'm currently rebuilding my transfer case. Replacing/repairing input & output yokes and shifter shafts and bearing, trying to stop the slobbers.
When I had my transfer case r and r done, we had room for 2 modern output shaft seals, put one facing in and outside one facing out, to decrease potential weeping
