Potential 6.0 purchaser questions

Hello everyone! I've been a member of this site for some time now. I was an owner of a 2005 Expedition. I now own a 99 Ranger and really have enjoyed having a pickup truck.

I am now preparing to covert the ranger to a race truck and now want to purchase a 6.0 F450 that will haul it. The funds are split in two however. I will be spending a larger portion on a Lincoln Navigator for work use, and the smaller portion (about $15k) will be left for the F450.

I'm not going to be very picky on this truck. I just want 4 full sized doors and 4wd. I would enjoy the manual trans and wouldn't shy away from it if it showed up.

I'll be looking at anything from dump trucks to tow trucks. What ever comes across that fits my few requirements.

So the questions now is,what should I look for when checking these trucks out? Are there any common issues that might get overlooked? How would I know if it's studded or has and egr delete?

Thanks!

Do you mind me asking why f450? Some states they are a lot more to licence, and insure. They are also a lot harder to find.

If you find a truck, stop on over and post it up in the 6.0L diesel forum before you purchase.

When you find one you are looking for, post up some photos, especially the engine bay.

Good luck with your hunt.

Oh, and anytime a person is looking for a 6.0L, a tool to do some checking of PIDs is good insurance. Something like a Scangauge II, Torque APP with bluetooth dongle for OBD2 port. Edge CTS and Dash Boss for Apple phones.

I like to be over prepared and I think the F450 is pretty good at being that. To my understanding these trucks have the strongest suspension and 4x4 systems, which gives me piece of mind. I'll have confidence in the truck when I go to on vacations with 15,000 lb trailers and a little mud stands in my way. Or if I hit the beach with a large boat, the truck will likely go wherever I want it to.

I planing to purchase a 30 ft mobile garage from a buddy of mine in the future and many more trailers as I find space for them. Because I like to over prepare, I like to take stuff with me. I want to drag that trailer loaded down with a sleeper camper in the truck bed, to race tracks all around the country and not see a single problem on my trips.

My buddy has a 350 7.3 2wd and it's a solid and reliable truck, but he wouldn't take it through some of the mud holes we used to find on an old land plot we managed. I would've ran right though them in a 450 4wd with no second thought to it.

F350 DRW will be more than enough to haul any trailer with a race car in it. Just sayin'. I've towed 14,400 lbs and actually forgot it was back there while driving on the interstate with cruise control on.

The 450 will have a heaverier rear axle with lower gear ratio and that is really about it. Stay with the 2005 to 2007 years. That gets you bigger brakes, stronger frame, better coil spring front axle with tighter turning radius, Factory trailer brake controller and upfitter switches.
The F350 drw with 430 gears is rated at a GCVW 26000 lbs. All other configurations of 05-07 f250 and 350 6.0 are rated to 23,000-23,500 GCVW.

I think you guys are right. I probably don't need that much truck, a 350 should handle everything I'm planing fairly well. So I've started to look at them some more. I'm finding them to be a bit more expensive however and with less like I'm looking for in my price range.

Does this truck look legitimate? The "King Ranch Lariat" tag is something I've never seen before. Is it a custom build?

http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used-Ford-F-350-Super-Duty-d343?sourceContext=google&showListingId=123565201# listing=115368902

Gonna keep going at it. I'm sure when I find the truck that was meant for me, I'll know! lol

King ranch is an option package for the lariat. Saddle grade leather seats and some other stuff. That actually looks like it could be a good buy, IF! everything checks out.

And these Texas vehicles don't rust! I might just go check it out after work tomorrow.
