Fuel tank sending unit

Hey guys, I need your help. I was driving my 72' f100 today and noticed I needed gas so I went and filled up. When I got back in and started the truck I noticed that it still said I was on empty. I came home and read that if you took the orange wire and grounded it and then turned the key, if the fuel gauge showed full it was your sending unit. So I did that and what do you know the gauge showed full. My question is if it really is the sending unit, and if so where could I buy one. I went to autozone and the guy didn't have a clue about what I was talking about as always lol. Thanks for all the help!

P.S. It's a 5.9L 360

Pull the sender and see if the float is still there... and if is still attached, determine wheter it has a hole and has sunk.... a new float is about $5.

I pulled it and put it in my pool and it still floated.

Jake I recently picked up one from Rick at Carolina Classics in Durham NC. Upon installation it wasn't working correctly so I started checking and found the ground wire wasn't grounding, did some paint removal and it worked much better.
