1996 f350 sending unit/pump gasket issue

The gasket seal on the top of my tank is super lame in design. Tabs that twist and lock under the tank tabs. Fail for Ford. I need to drop my tank again and re seal it. It leaks fuel when I fill. Is there any tricks/tips to look for? The tabs were hard to twist and lock and place and maybe gasket shifted. Any fuel silicone crap that I could goop over the edge after to be sure it seals good?

If it's a steel tank, get a brass punch and use it to hit the tabs further to create a tighter seal.

Much easier to get to by pulling the bed off. I'm working on a couple myself right now. These Fords are really stacking up around here.

I can't argue that they are not easier to work on with the bed off, but to me, I don't think it's worth the trouble. I just replaced the side (front) tank on my 96 F150 and I was done in about 90 minutes. I didn't even have to raise the truck (I have a 4X4). The only issue was that rust/dirt was falling in my face, but of course, that's what safety glasses are for!! I hear the aft of axle tank is much more difficult to deal with however.

Are you sure that is where it is leaking?
A common place is where the fill tube is soldered into the tank.
If that is were it is leaking you can reseal the tube with JB weld.

I agree with SubFord - it's probably leaking at the filler tube/tank wall juncture where it's soldered. I have never seen fuel leak at that gasket seal unless one (or more) of the four tabs did not get seated properly under its' corresponding tank tabs - or the steel ring was not properly torqued to specs. At which point, that is user error, not design flaw.
