GTP38 turbo bushings / bearings?

I bought a rebuild kit on ebay for my GTP38 turbo. Everything installed fine, but upon reassembly I noticed that there was side to side shaft play. I tore it back down and could see the brass bushings (bearings) were tight on the shaft but were slightly loose in the bore of the turbo housing. I removed them, and reinstalled the old worn bushings, and they were loose on the shaft but tight in the bore of the turbo housing. I compared the old bushings to the new ones and the new ones had a slightly smaller outside diameter (OD).

I was wondering if anyone else experienced this, and if so, where did you find the correct bushings? Is there a store anyone can recommend where I could buy bushings by specific size?

You usually really want to stay away from eBay deals when you can. Like Chet mentioned, give Riffraff Diesel a call. I have gotten several OEM Garrett kits for 7.3L and 6.0L from them and never had any issues. Also, when you reassemble with the proper kit remember that you will have more play than usual because your bearings are dry. Once the oil hits them they become tight as they ride on a film of oil.

I installed a EBay kit in mine and didn't have that issue at all... I've only got about 1000 miles on it since rebuild, but no issues what so ever yet. Fairly easy to do too.

thanks for the referral, turns out the center cartridge in mine was modified at some point as its larger than the stock replacements by a good 0.2mm+. Looks like its time for a new center cartridge.

Or you can see if you can find the bushings that fit your cartridge. If there is nothing else wrong with it, maybe a PO did that to save it. A cartridge isn't cheap .Maybe call Garrett and see if they offer oversize bushings? If you have the dimensions, maybe they can match it to a different application listing?
