Myself I would lose it as long as your tank and lines are in good condition. Check with the pump MFG and see what they recommend.
Agreed, also if you use that splitter filter I would mount it as close to the carb as possible, in Gary's Jeep it is sitting on the intake manifold. On my brother's Dodge pickup it is mounted to the side of the block where a mechanical fuel pump might otherwise go. If your pump is the typical with the impeller at the end of the motor, only the pump section needs to be at/below the tank outlet, the pump preferably should not hang down below the bottom of the frame for safety.

I was advised to install a filter between the pump and tank to protect the pump.

This filter Crown Automotive - Fuel Filter Kit - Fits 1980 to 1986 CJ:With 2.5L engine - 4WheelParts.com is to be installed between the pump and regulator. Can it be installed right next to the pump? If it can I can just plumb it back to the tank without having the run another line back up to the engine bay where the regulator is.

Were you advised by the MFG to use a pre filter? If so there will be a recommended one. A restriction on the inlet side will kill the pump just the same as a restriction on the outlet side.

After all that you guys have told me, I'm now thinking of getting a pump like the Holley red pump:

The connections are low on it and I could mount it near the tank.

Honestly I would look into one of the frame rail mounted pumps that were used in 1980s Ford trucks and vans. OEM stuff is designed to run for 100000 miles, I would take that over a holley pump any day.

I am planning to move the pump from the frame rail to right behind the tank where the outlet is.

I was thinking of using the Airtex E8090 but I talked to Airtex and they said the E8090 is not big enough and recommend the E84070N for my application. The only problem is that it will hang down below the tank since the connections are above the pump.

The Holley 12-801-1 has similar flow and pressure specs and has the connections at the bottom. Are there any other pumps with the connections at the bottom?

Droptop70ss - What OEM pump is that? Do you know a part number?

Which model did you use? What motor do you have?

Did this pump make a thump-thump-thump noise in operation? It appears to be a solenoid-type pump, which is not adequate for a 429. These basically just electrically cycle a magnetic piston inside the case to pump fuel.

The Holley pumps are actual gear pumps, much like a GM oil pump, and what is used on high pressure EFI systems. Much higher flow and a constant, smooth flow of gas, and they have a built-in recirculation valve to prevent really high pressures at idle. But a recirculation path from up near the carb back to the tank may prevent vapor lock-type problems.

Yes, that's why Airtex recommended the rotary E84070N pump.

I just need the connections at the bottom of the pump. The tank is about 5 inches below the frame. I don't want the pump to hang below that.

That pump is very similar if not identical to the Airtex E84070N. Unfortunately both will hang below the tank. I will have to use the Holley since it is the only one that has the connections at the bottom.

Maybe you already said why but for a carb why are you not just using a mechanical fuel pump?

It just seemed like a good idea at the time when I replaced the tank and fuel lines.
